A Dorkly article, Love & Videogames: A Valentine's Day Infographic, listed, among others, the results of a poll about who player's romanced in Mass Effect 2, the results were:
Miranda - 42%
Tali - 26%
Jack - 6%
Jacob - 1%
Garrus - 5%
Thane - 2%
Kelly - 4%
Samara - 2%
Morinth - 1%
Nobody - 13%
For those who chose to romance nobody, I wonder how many of them were choosing to remain loyal to their ME1 love interest, and how many of them simply didn't find any of the ME2 LI's interesting or are holding out for a same-sex romance.
I was also surprised by Tali's and Thane's placing, given the amount of fan support they both have, but I suppose a Yvonne Strahovski's face trumps adorable Quarians and terminal Drells.
Thoughts?
Good !
A slap in the face of people who think that the BSN community represent all ME2 players.

Tried to put my FemShep through that torment and just... lawdy, I couldn't do that to her. She's had to do some bad stuff before but that was just too much. Think I might have gotten about half way through (moment of pride) before losing it; it was such a scarring experience. Sanity > Prize.
...Wonder how they calculated the Morinth stats. Wat.
And does Kelly really "count"? A good deal of folks "romanced" her simply because the most advanced warship in the galaxy lacked an automated fish feeder (robozombiething space hamster ftw).

My first time through I made a point not to know who the romancible characters were, just play like myself and "talk" to the people that I enjoyed talking to. When I found out who the romance options were for FShep after having "talked" to these people, I laughed awkwardly and thought, "eh, maybe next game."

The average gamer cares little for the romances, they just want to see some t'n'a.
Miranda is the obvious choice.

Also this. It's all about blowing off steam when it comes to the average, casual gamer that plays the game no more than once.GodWood wrote...

However, no other feature takes up so much mindshare on our forums as
romances in our games. Yet, it is a relatively small percentage of
players who actually play them (yes I do have stats to back up this
claim, but no, I am not sharing them).

Don't know - I'd be more interested in seeing Bioware's figures on the player choices since the poll's going to be fairly limited to people who visit that site and can be bothered to vote. *wanders off to google*

I didn't romance anyone in either game (I've only played FShep). I can't even fake interest in someone made up of pixels in order to get an achievement.
I was of the same mind myself initially but given the way the dialogue cuts off in ME2 (and being nosy) I wanted to find out more about certain characters, although I stopped after the first once I realised youtube had dialogue videos

Because Yvonne has so much in common with Mirandas in game model.
hint: She doesn't.

But I am still flabberghasted that Garrus was rated highest out of the female options listed.
Pleasantly flabberghasted of course...

TALI ONLY 26%?! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!!!
But I think Miranda's ass had a hand in this.
Face it Tali is the 2nd most popular female in the game. She is about to get lapped by Miranda but still 2nd most popular.

I think that the thing with the Thane thread, is that it mostly consists of a small-ish group of people posting there regularly. But I always thought that the option that most femsheps went for would be Liara. Of course, she wouldn't be included in the stats there.

you know, I'm really curious why would you think that liara would be most popular with femsheps? (reserving personal opinions for now)

Thane and Garrus however, are more for those more narrow minded people, Garrus in particular.
He is an 'alien looking' alien, which would put most people off. Also, a lot of people view him in a 'brotherly' sort of way.
Thane has a very deep character and romance, his philosophy, his past and his mortality will put a lot of people off. And from the BSN forums, there are many femsheps who have romanced Liara.
Oh yeah, and who was the other LI for a femshep? Oh yeah, Jacob. Shepard's raping dialogue is enough to turn anyone away from even considering it. The 1% speaks for itself, unfortunately.

Sure, there are many femsheps that romanced Liara, for various reasons (and for some the fact that she's the only s/s option, contributed a great deal) . while there are plenty of people who are attracted to the less usual for varied reasons, there are just as many of not more people who are attracted to the more, what's the word I'm looking for?... conventional. for a straight woman playing a female character, a human male is definitely a safer choice then an alien female.
Jacob is actually a nice romance, once you get past that horrifying way femshep speaks to him (she speaks that way if you're befriending him too) and as much as I adore Garrus (seriously, one of my favorite characters in the entire game and the reason for much crumpled up paper in a garbage bin - drawing him as recognizable Garrus is an adventure) - friend Garrus talks to me about calibrations, while Jacob talks about drinks on the Citadel.
The reason Garrus wins over Thane btw is that he has less emotional baggage and he's funny. my god, is he funny.
