I do take the point somewhat that others make (this isn't in response to you, as I know you weren't targetting me anyway). Origins, for some of the starting stories, didn't throw you into combat straight away. However, the game still features a lot of combat and well... what do people expect when the family is fleeing a darkspawn army...? For there to be no action, while people sit down and converse/sing? Or take a leisurely stroll?

I mean really... and it's not like we haven't known about how the game starts for quite a while.

I think they just reverted the order of things at the beginning. In DA:O you got the introduction to your character and the world first and then it lead you into the fighting system. In DA2 it will probably be the other way around. Since you're on the flight, you have to fight first and after that you get the introduction to your character and the world, when Hawke escaped the Darkspawn.

And we have to keep in mind, that this is a demo for conventions and was supposed to show the fight and not the characters or the story of the game.

Considering all the "this is not representative of the game" comments the early videos got, not even that. False marketing strategy?

But I´d rather have had character creation before the first fight. Depending on your character, they get right Hawke´s sex and class, which is fine if s/he´s a mage, but otherwise common folk can tell apart warrior and rogue in the legend but not race, hair, or anything else.

I think the same.

If we assume the part of the game shown in this demo is equivalent to the origins in DA:O... I think it's a bit heavier on combat, with less chat, than most of them. Of course, it makes sense in the context of them being on the run... not the best time for long character discourse... but here's hoping that the (non-exagerated) ogre fight's near the end of the 'fleeing the blight' sequence, 'cos I suspect by that point, I'd be about ready for a change of pace... with the ogre as a de-facto boss, that seems likely... although at the end of the 3/5 video, there were more hurlocks arriving, so I'm not sure... And, as Gerudan put it, since this was apparently designed for conventions and the like, they might have increased the number of combats over the standard, to give people plenty to do; after all, a noisy convention hall isn't the best place to listen to dialogue subtleties...

So what's the deal with releasing it on the 22nd? Why don't you release it later today, and you'll get a three day weekend of people home doing nothing anyways and that 1 million mark will be more obtainable.

This thread went from discussing the demo videos to senseless QQing about a demo that, supposedly, isn't the one we're going to be playing on the 22nd.
<_<

You can be the judge of that for yourself. Looks pretty "full demo"-style to me:

It is a demo, just not the same one we're getting in a few days(it's the GamesCom convention demo).

To quote Chris:

Chris Priestly wrote...

***ATTENTION. YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE.***

This IS NOT the demo that will be released to the public on February 22.

I
see a bunch of questions thining that this person got early access to
the demo or whatever. This is a build and demo from a convention
appearance. It isn't the demo you will all be getting on Feb 22.

Just so you know.

did anyone else catch the part of the conversation amongst the Hawkes when Carver said that "We've been running since Ostagar."?

does that mean that Hawke and Carver fought at Ostagar, but when that turned into a disaster, returned to Lothering to pick up Mom and Bethany before fleeing?

I think we're taking that as them treating Ostagar as an event, not really a location.

"We've been running since Ostagar (happened)."
as opposed to
"We've been running since (we were at) Ostagar."

I'm guessing it's more of a reference to time. As in "we've been running since the battle of Ostagar took place, which you all know was <insert appropriate number> days ago".

Of course, it could be that Hawke and/or Carver fought at Ostagar, but since Hawke can also be an apostate mage I highly doubt it.

usually games with bad graphics are content heavy....dragon age 2 is bad from every point of view.
Graphics are mediocre, and gameplay is hack n slash.....you can't customize your party appearence and exploration is near to zero......
People on forums outside this....look at skyrim and the witcher 2 and ask themselves why they should buy dragon age 2

Psst, you want to know something? I look at The Witcher in my Steam library and I look at the people constantly crowing about how awesome The Witcher 2 is, and then I ask myself this: Why I should buy The WItcher 2 when I haven't been able to force myself to finish the first game? I haven't finished the first game because the repetitive combat and the combat system itself have been a major turn-off.

As far as DA2 goes, I guess when you say hack & slash in reference to the game, you're conveniently ignoring the fact that we can pause and play tactically just like always. Or did I imagine that part in the live stream where Mike Laidlaw paused the game and even showed the programmable tactics...nope, pretty sure that really happened.

Nothing was going to change earlier when some of us mentioned not liking the "new art direction" that had been announced. It's just that now things are set and final, some people will feel free to complain about the stuff they didn't like all along, because now they know they'll have to like it or lump it because the chance of it changing is now next to nill.

But the chance of it changing in the future is not, hence the critical response, that's how I see it anyway. I'll use every opportunity I get to say them in the hope that someone at Bioware might catch it and reconsider some of the design choice for DA3.

Ogre battle with a rogue in party is a lot easier.
