That whole scene where her husband died was really lame and anti-climatic.
I think the emotion in that scene came off really well myself.

Even in death, there is DERP.

The attacks are unrealistically fast. They went from too slow to way too fast. It looks like everyone is on cocaine.
Cocaine draught confirmed for DA2.

Except Hawke suddenly cared, now that the danger had passed, more about dealing with Wesley rather than her brother who had been deceased for all of 3 minutes, if that..
The emotional content and execution of these opening scenes just feel hollow and confused, to me anyway..

I do like though that there is a difference in their reactions but I'll have to choose different responses and see if Carver acts like that in that situation no matter what tone you use~

Keep in mind that this is Varric telling a story based on second hand knowledge. Unlike the rest of the game, he wasn't there. He knows what happened but can't exactly describe it in detail.

It SURVIVES!
But in other news, FemHawke looks real good there. Again, LOVE the focus on Hawke's eyes compared to the Warden's.

I'm getting kind of tired of that old gem.. It's a shallow excuse for bad writing and poorly executed emotional scenes.. "Varric said it" is as bad as "god did it" to me..

Now, Mama Hawke didn't looked sad enough, but there are occasions when people feel way more sad than they look/sound, so I'll give her that.

I do happen to agree with you that it is overused, but I am looking past it since he hadn't met Hawke yet. If the level of character emotion doesn't increase AFTER having met Varric, I will be quite worried.Revan312 wrote...

It's a storyteller's job to infuse the tale with drama and emotion, so this is still a rubbish excuse and makes absolutely no sense if Varric is in fact the legendary tale-weaver we're told to expect.

Let me put it this way. the emotion in the scenes come off really well considering ITS A F****** VIDEOGAME!!!. Damn. Some of you people expect too much.
LA Noire has already proven you can do life-like facial expressions in a game.
