I watched my grandmother die ALONE a few years ago.

And I reacted like it was nothing. I actually SMILED when the doctor came back out of the room even though I knew what happened.

I loved my grandmom. I smiled because I knew she went to a better place, and I'm used to death so its not something that causes major grief in me.

Hell, I was freaking out and crying BEFORE she was dead, as she was laying there on her deathbed hours before.

Once it happened, it was nothing.

So I wouldn't automatically assume that Mama Hawke's reaction isn't good enough.

I do happen to agree with you that it is overused, but I am looking past it since he hadn't met Hawke yet. If the level of character emotion doesn't increase AFTER having met Varric, I will be quite worried.

For some reason I can't imagine it will.. This was Hawke's brother/sister dieing.. if they couldn't write in an approprietly grief stricken scene for any of those characters I can't see them giving it the ole college try later..  Hell, she had as much if not more emotion dealing with Wesley than she did with Carver.. gah.

I have a feeling this script was a bit rushed.. I don't want to start a huge flame war over my very obviously assumptionary conclusion, but there it is. I suppose I'll see when it's released.

Umm, Carver wasn't on his death bed.. Carver was suddenly and very violently killed in front of them.  It would be equivelent to watching your young sibling/child getting hit by a bus..

I don't think the circumstances being compared are even close to the same.

I think some expressions are better than none, as far as a cinematic experience goes. Though I see how that could impair roleplaying the character you want, particularly if they do something way out of the left field.

But lol at the nug extermination blurb towards the end. "Battle of the Squealing Plains." Priceless.

I did thought that the emotion was off. Not of Lady Hawke, because I see no point in asking 'what she is feeling?'. She is my character, I decide what she's feeling, even if she doesn't express it.

Now, Mama Hawke didn't looked sad enough, but there are occasions when people feel way more sad than they look/sound, so I'll give her that.

I would have agreed with you if it were a silent PC like it was in DA:O, but there's no excuse for it now that they're going for the cinematic route with voice. There's certain expectation Bioware must meet especially with Mass Effect games as precedent, right now even the poncy Mike Thorton felt more expressive than femHawke. I thought mama Hawke was pretty well done though, especially when she blamed you for Carver's death.

Let me put it this way. the emotion in the scenes come off really well considering ITS A F****** VIDEOGAME!!!. Damn. Some of you people expect too much.

LA Noire has already proven you can do life-like facial expressions in a game.

What?. Facial expressions are only part of it. The emotion im referring to has to do with what the characters are reacting to, in regards to the situation they are in. They arent in a hospital knowing their loved ones are about to die. They arent at a funeral home where said loved ones are already dead, and they are taking the grief in full. they are dealing with their emotions on the fly, in the immediacy of the moment. This person they love, this family member just died. Meanwhile, there is an army of darkspawn still attacking, and they have to get out of there fast. They dont have time to stand around singing Oh Danny Boy.

To be honest, I expected to see a repeat scene of the Inferno golem from Awakening happen to the unlucky sibling. Now THAT would have made for a tragic death.

Exactly.

There's no time to sit there and grieve. There'll be time for that later. They need to get OUT of there first.

Oh hell.

Let's just make it clear that Carver, as seen in the most recent footage, is only derp IN DEATH. You can't fault the boy, perfectly handsome while alive, for his face being... unfortunate after death. Stop picking on him Saibh, you... mean, mean bully!

Oh, I agree with this. I love the way every bit of her face looks alive.

Now, I'm very confused. After the time skip, why we see Carver alive? I'm not sure if that was mentioned here? It also looks very fast paced, in a second a guy steal our money, in the other we're encountering Isabela in a dark place.

Then if the situation is soo dire, why did they have a 5 minute conversation with Flemeth?  And take another couple minutes to respectfully kill Wesley?  Yet, even though they're essentially safe they just leave without even showing an ounce of emotion about their brother who was literally just murdered.

"Well, bye Carver's corpse.. We liked you, I guess.. whatever lets go."

It's sloppy writing, period..  Hopefully the writers got into the groove more the further they progressed into the story production because that scene was pathetic imo.

Also the next two posts

So why does Aveline not even say goodbye to her husband? She grieved for ten years after his death? Seriously? It didn't seem like she really gave a damn. Oh you want to kill him? Okay, I guess if that stranger says so. A farewell kiss would have been nice maybe, or a friendly pat on the head.

"Rushed" is just about the kindest thing I can say about that scene.

I love how Bethany ACTUALLY CARES that Carver's dead, unlike the other way around.

Unfortunatelly, ("paragon") Hawke still doesn't seem to care, there's just no signs on her face that would sugest that. And also during Hawke killing the husband (forgot his name), Aveline is off-screen the whole time. I dunno, pretty dissapointing if you ask me. They are still a long way off from evoking real drama/emotions, at least in those moments that don't involve some big, epic stuff happening.

As a person whose main character is always a tank, I was seriously disappointed with Aveline's repetitive attack animation. Yet she was the only one who remained standing.

Yes. The emotions were bad, shallow and all that and didn't manage to penetrate through my hard, manly shell of anti-emotions whatsover.
*wipes eyes*

That's not what I said at all. The facial animations of his wife and how she behaved and her body language wasnt acted very well.

I got a very "ah well, cest la vie" vibe from her, which doesn't fit because its your freaking husband dying

Two thoughts:

1. I wonder how many milliseconds it will take people to mod Flemeth's horn-hair and outfit onto a Lady Hawke?

2. I got a chuckle when Flemeth's first words were "Well, well, what have we here?"  Like mother, like daughter.

I thought Aveline reaction was okay, actually. The face she does after Lady Hawke says she'll kill Wesley meant a lot, to me. I think she just knew she wouldn't bear to see her husband being killed and didn't wanted to show, ah, ''''weakness'''' to strangers. I agree that she could have tried to argue with Lady Hawke a little, thought.

Now, I wonder her reaction if we say she should do it.

The character models are beautifully done and the environment graphics look great. Varric's dialogue with Cassandra was very entertaining. But with respect to the gameplay, the setting is bland, the dialogue is uninteresting, there is no emotional connection between Hawke and his/her family, and the combat is repetitive and imo too frequent considering it's just autoattack vs. carbon copy enemies.

After watching Part 4/20 http://www.youtube.c...u/0/ndKOs1j3Uqs I take back most of this criticism. The introduction parts 1,2 and 3 were so boring though, a very bad start to what looks like a very good game.

Because they didn't know whether there would be anymore incoming darkspawn.

For all they knew, the friggen Blight itself could've descended upon them and even Flemeth wouldn't of been able to do anything.

If I were in that situation(as Hawke), I honestly wouldn't be grieving over Carver yet. I'd do that once I was absolutely SURE I was safe and secure.

The only time they are safe and secure? Once they reach Kirkwall.

I was wishing for Aveline to say goodbye to her husband (or do anything in reference to her husband dying) all the way through that scene. But nooo, didn't happen.

I admit, it is very sorrow-less in the beginning. But mayhaps it gets a bit more emotional once Varric joins the party and experiences Hawke's life first-hand. Yes? :innocent:
