My friends was playing Mass Effect 2 over at me and encountered  a problem. No matter what his paragon or renegade is at the options was greyed out. It happend after he recruited Thane. It really annoys me and my friend, mostly him because he don't want to restart. Does anyone know of this bug or how to solve it?

Don't know whether what you've mentioned is a real bug or not, but the Paragon/Renegade points system doesn't really work the way you'd expect.

The game tracks all possible points during dialogue and keeps track of it as a percentage. If your points tally doesn't meet that percentage then the specific option does not get highlighted. The Miranda/Jack encounter is often cited as a case.

Basically if you play as a 'neutral' sometimes choosing Paragon and sometimes choosing Renegade then it's likely you've closed the door on those options. I think BioWare are trying to get us to be resolute in our moral convictions.

Well my friends paragon meter was just around the same as mine, nearly full but he still couldn't choose any of the options. I could when i played, choose the paragon and renegade options. I think i will try and see if it happends on a new game, because i'm a little worried it might affect all my saves.

The meter is not the best way to gauge the level of Paragonness or Renegadeness your Shepard is. As I wrote, the game calculates via some percentage figure. You can have a full meter one way or the other, but still not get the associated option if you choose the opposite alignment enough times during the game.

Again, it isn't necessarily a bug. If it was I would suspect other members chiming in with 'me too' posts. Though maybe a bump might draw some attention to the matter for confirmation.

I'm having the same problem; I was nearly full on the Paragon side and had about a pinky's fingernail width of "Renegadeness."

While I get that the meter isn't the best gauge it is the only one we have. Additionally, this was maybe my 8th play through. Had the same problem on my 7th. Figured I'd just went after Jack and Miranda too early. So, I started over and waited almost until the end. The Jack and Miranda thing didn't work. Had the same problem with Zaeed. And with the Specter during the "Lair of the Shadow Broker."

I figure I lost about 20 hours the first time I had this problem. Lost maybe 30 or 35 the nest time. That's 50 to 55 hours just wasted. To play through again--assuming the problem was in my decision making and not in the game--that'll be another 40 hours to do everything I want to do.

I love this game but if I can't get ending I want in order to set up Mass Effect 3, I don't know what I'm going do.

Thoughts?

I've explained it twice already; what you both have indicated is not a bug. It's just that the representation of one's alignment can be misleading.

Kevyn 668: what you've indicated is precisely what is 'wrong' with that representation. The only way to be absolutely sure is to have a pure playthrough. You can obtain points in the opposite alignment under certain circumstances because it cannot be avoided; but where you have choice do not choose the opposite alignment. By doing so you risk losing the necessary percentage the game actually requires for an alignment choice.

If you still don't believe me:
