Wrong. Melee does the same damage as Ranged.

The damage is the same; the animation is just different. Except you're safer from a distance (unless Archers are hanging around). Mages are still squishy.
Not if you have rock armor.

Hopefully its paving way for a proper Arcane Warrior type character. Not a "turn eveyr buff on and go to sleep" one.
Indeed. I like this mechanic. In fact, the DAO Arcane Warrior was kind of odd to me for that reason. I would have generally imagined that mages who wanted to melee were there to cause mass havoc, not to be a tank. The AW seemed to emphasize defense quite a bit (at least until all the damage-field spells came out in the expansion), with almost zero actual spellcasting.
This new direction for mage seems to lay down the groundwork for an Arcane Warrior who is more like what I'd imagine a warrior-mage is: someone who still likes blasting, but just does it up-close and personal. Of course this new style is possible in part because of the new instant-action combat mechanic. Being squishy is a fair trade-off, although a little defensive enhancement would probably be requisite for a true battle mage.

I'm just kidding, I hope there is some kind of battle mage build that is unique and fun. It better not outshine warriors though!

Mage cannot stand up to a warrior in melee combat! Can a book nerd beat up the school wrestling champ! NO! If you want to melee then pick warrior, or if you want to fight like a scumbag pick a rogue! If you want to babble at people and launch fireballs pick mage, but dont pick a mage and try to fight like a warrior!

Damage wise Mage might be better with their spells, but if they prefer close combat,, the mage character will die faster than warrior, since their hp bar is really really low compared to warrior,
I like the idea of mage wearing armor and being a close combat fighter, although it is not the ideal setting for mage, anyway since hydra's razor seems to increase mana I think there will be some sword weapons that can be good for mages.

A developer reported that it increases both mana and stamina. Resource increasing items in DA:O were a little ambiguous with their naming, and the traits may have even been married (enchantment X increases both mana and stamina). It's possible that this is what's going on with the Razor, but of course I can't be certain.

I just want to be able to get the whole "battle Mage" feel, in that I can hold my own in melee but I really shine in shooting waves of flame and ice heheh. Hopefully melee for mages will be slightly more useful in da2 than dao.
Unless we start using spells, I do not think it will be that useful compared to DA origin. Staff damage tends to be lower because they do not miss and they do not have critical hits, unless they changed that... Mage using sword or some other weapons will always be inferior compared to warrior or rouges, in my personal opinion I think battle mage build in DA 2 will be cant hold his own in melee but if they start using spell and do some crowd control... Fun and enjoyable, but not really useful in terms game play....
althuogh I am sure I will do some melee with my mage since I love spear and polearm and it seems mage's melee animations remind me of spears.

I hope so. That would be so fun to play.godlike13 wrote...
Im sure depending on the build a Mage can hold his own just fine in melee. Maybe not tank, but be effective non the less.

Actually if the "book nerd" has read the right books, and or knows how to use said books he can beat up the school wrestling champ.

even so, actuall armor is still tougher. although yes, rockarmor will give give you considerable protection in CQB
