I suppose that you could also have actual armor, if you wanted to make a really weird mage and pump up your strength stat.

Mage cannot stand up to a warrior in melee combat! Can a book nerd beat up the school wrestling champ! NO! If you want to melee then pick warrior, or if you want to fight like a scumbag pick a rogue! If you want to babble at people and launch fireballs pick mage, but dont pick a mage and try to fight like a warrior!

I'm just kidding, I hope there is some kind of battle mage build that is unique and fun. It better not outshine warriors though!

Actually if the "book nerd" has read the right books, and or knows how to use said books he can beat up the school wrestling champ.

Take your elitist ideaology back to what ever rascist anti-social organization you are a memeber of , and stay amoongst like minded fools.

Thank you and have a nice day.

LOL I'm a nerd that plays sports and works out as hobbies that sometimes get in the way of my gaming time, i'm a little over six foot and 83 kg, i play NRL football and i was age champion in year 12.... I would be able to defeat a wrestling champ because i don't have traing in anything accept charging into or tackling charging people but if i had magic to give myself an edge i'd kill him as an Arcane Warrior.

As I understand it, Mage Melee uses Magic, not Strengt.

Im sure depending on the build a Mage can hold his own just fine in melee. Maybe not tank, but be effective non the less.

That's how my mage was in DA:O long before I got the Arcane Warrior Speciality.  From the first moment I had the chance, my Mage was given a sword and shield.  Sure, he sucked at melee for during the beginning, but as soon as he started to level up, he was able to contribute with melee.

It might even work out better in DA2 if as many points aren't being used to boost strength in order to increase melee damage.

If the fine folks at Bioware would just hurry up and kick off mage week, maybe we could get some real answers.

First off I was joking.

Secondly, reading about something doesn't really teach you how to do it, doing something teaches you how to do it. A nerd that reads books on martial arts and doesnt practice will be killed by a trained fighter 99 out of 100 times. The fighter not only studies his martial art, but practices it constantly. The nerd will also have a body which is adapted to inactivity reading books and playing video games, whereas the fighters body has adapted to struggle and intense physical activity. The match would not even be close.

The UFC proved long ago that no scrawny dude who studies impractical martial arts and doesn't train properly is going to beat a trained fighter. That being said, Id love to see a mage melee build that was comparable in effectiveness to a warrior or rogue due to magic buffs and defenses, but definitely not better.

I like the idea of the mage being able to actually fwap things with their staff. Although, if you can make them super beast tanks/melee damage dealers, once again I think they'd be overpowered. Mages need to be squishy, otherwise you don't even have to think about what class to be.

Obviously you can add to dex, or str for more defense/armor, which is fine, but inherently making them more resistant just isn't a good idea for balance. A warrior would be pointless if a mage could easily tank/melee DPS. A mage with Mind Blast and Heal would wreck mobs way too easily.

You can be book smart, and strong you know that right? I work out all the time, but I like to spend my time studying, and learning new stuff. Frankly if I had the choice of being able to kick someones ass, or being super smart. I'd choose being super smart everyday.

Also for a mage. Who needs brawn when you can burn a persons face off with your mind.

That would be metagaming, if you're into the story you should just assume the role and play it out without caring a mage would be all powerfull.

I think its cool, i just wonder why mages are suddenly ablo to effectively swing a weaponstaff when they weren't able before. (reminds me off a ret-con ammo system in another Bioware game)

You have just proven that you do not have the ability to think or comprehend what you have just read.  Cause if a nerd uses his books to hit you in the head and knock your butt out you have just lost.
This was what i meant but knowing how to use his books. you dumb jock.

The UFC also proved that a guy from the world of professional wrestling can come in and dominate and win titles.
Try to at least sound smarter next time you post something, or better yet go do some research first.

BTW i am not flaming or trolling you just a friendly interwebnets argumentative banter.

The bickering doesn't really have anything to do with DA2 any more, does it? Get back on topic or we're done here.

Wasnt bickering just making observations but meh whatever.

ONTOPIC:  Mages should not be allowed to wear metal armor, they should be using thier magic to cast spells.

Wouldnt have been as fun if Raistlin was wielding a sword, or Gandalf had a mace.  Magic is a mages armor, and weapon.

Gandalf did quite a bit with his sword.

Wherever the Laidlaw livestream demo video is.  The rock armor actually looks like you're wearing armor made out of rock.

why is the mage always stereotyped as a bookworm/smart guy? why can't we get more of a warrior scholar? I don't wan't a mage to be as effective in melee as a melee specialist like a warrior but I would still like something more than what we tend to get in fantasy gamesPosted Image

Meh here's to hopeing.
