This post contains spoilers regarding quests in Redcliffe, read on of your own accord.
I am trying to acquire the Helm of the Red. I know that every single person have to survive the battle, with the exxception of Dwyn's bodyguards. My friend said that getting Loyd the bartender to give the militia free drinks actually makes them perform worse in combat, but always thought the moral boost helped them. Which is it?
Other than that, does anyone have any tips that could help me out?

I cannot confirm or deny whether giving the militia free booze will bolster their defense score during the siege of Redcliffe. The wiki says so, but the wiki gets a lot of goddamn things wrong.
My experience is that you can only lose one un-named milita member during the assault on Redcliffe if you want to earn the Helm of the Red. Any "named" NPC who dies will cost you the Helm.
Part of your strategy is going to depend on when you go to Redcliffe and who you bring with you. Myself, I've managed to keep all the defenders alive by going to Redcliffe immediately after Lothering and bringing along Alistair, Morrigan and Leliana.
I convinced Owen to fix the militia's armour and Dwyn to help in the fight, which apparently boosts the militia's armour score and attack score respectively. I also strong-armed Berwick into helping to fight. Don't recruit Lloyd, as he's ****ing useless and will almost certainly die.
I also got the oil for Ser Perth, but that can be a double-edged sword, as the knights are terminally stupid and insist on running into the fire. I countered this by leading walking corpses away from the fire whenever I could. But you might want to skip the oil entirely.
My own strategy, as a dual-wielding rogue, was to run and gun. The biggest thing is to remember that you got a bunch of people helping you; you don't need to personally fell every zombie. Get a guy down to a sliver of health and someone will probably finish him off.
If a militia member was attacked by a zombie without anyone to help him, I immediately leapt in to help. A lone militia fighter engaging a walking corpse is almost certainly going to die. And prioritize the higher-tier zombies, as they will invariably bring down militia members.
I also micro-managed my allies a lot. Morrigan was helpful in this fight due to Mind Blast and Horror. Leliana could use Pinning Shot and Dirty Tactics when necessary. Alistair could use Shield Bash and Shield Pummel. Don't bother with Taunt or Threaten, as the zombies seem to prioritize killing NPCs anyway.
Final note: I was on the XBox 360 and have always been on "Normal" difficulty for this fight.

My answer is PC mage, Morrigan and Wynne specced all with mindblast, forcefield and healing spells. Heal/Forcefield NPC to keep them out of trouble and mindblast to keep the undead twiddling there thumbs. Don't recruit anyone extra they just get themselves killed.
Yes this is very cheap and not viable for most party makeups. But it does kinda hint that you have to control the battlefield and eliminate the enemies one at a time no matter the party makeup.

You can use any mage that knows the Heal spell to heal injured militia.
You may also use aoe spells (blizzard, tempest, inferno and especially earthquake to interdict areas outside of the villagers defended circle. Casting earthquake on the bridge is usually an excellent plan
Use runes to slow the zombies down at the circle is a good idea. If any of your warriors have taunt, use it.
If a militiaman is about to die and heal isn't up, cast forcefield on him.
If one is a damage magnet (Murdock or Lloyd) cast regeneration on them.

Ranged damage. Two mages + Leliana + 1 tank will do it, even on nightmare. Use Heal or Cleansing Aura to take care of the NPCs as well.

Actually the longer you wait to go to Redcliff the better it is. All the millitia have scatter shot later on. I also believe that not getting them drunk is a good thing. I find I have to do less through the encounter by a great deal. Just intimidate the elf to fight and for control of the bar and reap the rewards. Really, if you wait till after Broken Circle, Stone Prissoner, key to the city, they should have the skills to make it a walk vs simple undead. If Wynne has Earthquake, use it to hold an entire spawn section down while they get peltted. You don't need to rush it.
btw, I'm on ps3 and cant heal millitia. You can ward em though, repulsion works well in the small paths into the camp.
Oh, and don't ever get the bartender out there. Let him be a coward, you already took his bar. If he's out there it's his purpose to die.

Thanks for the advice. I'm in the Circle Tower right now so that I can have Wynne in my party. Between her healing spells and earthquake she should be quite helpful. I've done The Stone Prisoner so I can use Shale's Stoneheart ability, which is fully upgraded at this point.
I've heard that you can return to the party camp after entering Redcliffe without the town being destroyed, is this true?

no, you try to leave and Tomas, the guy on the bridge, runs up to you warning you that if you leave all is lost. Which is what I will be doing on my current play through after doing all the prep quests and Sten's sword to get the haunted village ending.
all evil runs are so fun. everyone dies, you get the crown, a ****ty little redhead, all the gold, and no one is the wiser.

For me the Oil in the Warehouse helps alot, I use high damage people like Sten Shale Dog and Myself as a mage. 9/10 times I get the Helm but I tell him to keep it, Since it isn't really the best Helm anyway

I find this fight easiest playing a mage. Glyphs are your friend as is waking nightmare and or sleep. Let the zombies kill each other or take a nap. Shale's stoneheart ability is great. As for Lloyd, when I have chosen to have him fight, I cast lifeward on him and keep it on him. I also tend to heal this myself and use Morrigan or Wynne for ranged damage/backup heals/refresh my mana. You can leave Redcliffe without it being destroyed. Just do not cross the bridge to talk to the NPC.

As long as you have a mage who can heal the militia, things go pretty well, I find.

I've tried to heal others besides my party on the PC and their health bars don't go back to green...I'm not seeing it work on the PC either. IN fact, this was what I was going to ask...how the heck does a character heal an npc? It just doesn't seem to work?

I was not aware that you cannot heal outside your party on the console. As for healing an NPC, I do this manually with heal and or rejueve. I found it frustrating when I first starting playing as they can be tricky to target.

Yeah, my first nightmare run had me very frustrated at how to keep militia alive, i usually take 3 dps and wynne to heal, stonefist undead off militia, and drop earthquake to slow down the waves so the militia will focus fire on those already inside the barricades. (big increase in dps)
