Earthborn gives keeps him inextricably connected to the human race and its planet of origin, and his impoverished upbringing prepares him for a rough life. He proves to be resilient when he is the sole survival of a thresher maw attack, which connects him to Cerberus. Maybe he isn't a hero, but he is a survivor, which is what the War Against the Reapers is truly about: survival.
