I've only done one playthrough.  I went with Williams.

I actually had a really hard time deciding.  Williams is human, tough as nails, poetic, faithful to God, and a genuine badass when the situation calls for it.  T'Soni is more bookish, wise but innocent, and pure of heart.  She doesn't even have to try, you just WANT to take care of a girl like that:P

Williams is the kind of girl that signs up to go trash the galaxy with you and drink beer with you during downtime.  T'Soni is the kind of girl you would go trash the galaxy for and then present it as a gift for her, and spend nice evenings in her pleasant company, embracing lots of eternity, during downtime from galaxy trashing.

When I played Lair of the Shadow Broker in ME2, I almost restarted ME1 to go with Liara instead of Ashley:P  I might yet.  Then again, I've been thinking of playing through ME1 and no doing the romance at all, then giving it up for Tali in ME2.  Tali's so cute when she's nervous

So, who did all the MaleSheps choose?

SPOILER

I went with Liara. Ashley's faith in god and intolerance of other species was enough to turn me away, and then leave her to die on Virmire. For the record, I went with Miranda in 2, with some Liara on the side.

I picked Ashley. On a purely aesthetic level Liara's voice grates, a lot, and I cannot bring myself to talk to her any more than absolutely necessary. Furthermore I have no desire to be Kirk and Giant Smurfs from Space do not float my particular boat.

More importantly however I just like Ash more. I did spend a playthrough chatting Liara and getting to know her and there's just nothing I like. Liara's just too sweet, too innocent, for me to take seriously as a person, I've met her type before and I can't stand them. Ash is smart, realistic, loyal, and good company; that's all I need.

As an aside I just don't like the Asari, I have issues with any race that could, should the mood strike them, break into your mind. My mind is mine and I like it the way it is.

My male Shepard went with Ashley and remained faithful through each. My male Shepard is a War Hero and is attracted to a fellow soldier and giving her up would be the last straw for him as he tries his best to remain loyal to the Alliance despite working with Cerberus.

As an atheist myself, I don't know why so many people are upset with Ashley believing in God since she is never seen being preachy or evangelical. Liara also believes in God and if the only reason people aren't offended by her belief is because she's an alien or because she believes God is female, them they're just being hypocritical. Also, humans are newcomers to the scene in this universe, so humans are bound to be uneasy with so many "strange" alien traits and customs, just as Liara and many Asari have biased views on humanity.

My renegade female Shepard went with Liara because she spends all day being a bad-ass that she wanted some one sweet in her life, though my female Shepard is troubled by the events in ME2 and LotSB.

I went with Ashley, not only because I find her to be an incredibly well-written and believable characrer (even though I don't like her much personally), but because I save Liara for my FemSheps.

@Abispa: It's because all too commonly people associate "believing in God/heaven" with "being a preachy whackjob."  It's amazing that people who consider Ash to be far too intolerant for their tastes tend to be pretty damn intolerant themselves.  Chalk me up as another athiest who really isn't bothered by it.

First time I played through I tried to romance Tali but... obviously that didn't happen.

Ashley has a great character, but she's a racist hardass and that didn't really appeal to me. I never thought Liara was too interesting... however I have used each of them as LI's in my second and fourth playthroughs and I have to go with Ashley as having the better romance. It felt more genuine to me, as you have a lot more backstory and whatnot with her.

Liara has a strange voice, it's true, and her general personality just made her seem almost too young in ME1... plus there was the side effect that once I had done Therum (Liara's mission) last, I just found it too hilarious and now *always* do it that way around (which rules out any relationship). On the other hand, despite thinking that Ashley is a better character (certainly written better at least), I never liked her *that* much. Oh, she also blew up. So ME1 was a lonely time for Shepard!

one romanced and saved Ashley - stayed loyal, one romanced and stayed loyal to Liara, one romanced Ashley and Liara at the same time, killed Ashley, going to cheat on Liara...with Jack AND Tali then going to attempt to sweet talk Liara back into his clutches..(I really hope that they will make it possible for Liara to dump this guy with extreme prejudice in ME3, I played him as the biggest womanizing jerk I could manage :P), one is confirmed bachelor (technically he's just that professional, but his sexuality may or may not change depending on what's going to happen with romances in ME3), and 2 were saved for Jack (paragon Shepard) and Miranda (renegade Shepard).

out of all these romances, Jack and Ashley are tied for me as favorites.

Liara, Ashley gets Virmired most of the time in my playthroughs. She's also one of my favorite characters.

First one finished ME1 as single (didn't know about romances, hahaha) ended up with Tali after ME2.

Second was fem, went with Liara, stayed with her through ME2 on both her playthroughs (first one was way before LotSB).

Third went with Ash, stayed faithful through ME2.

Imported the third into ME2 again, dumped ash for Jack that time.

Fourth was Fem again, went for Liara and stayed faihful.

Fifth was fem again, stayed single, remained single in ME2. She's just here to kick ass and chew bubblegum :P.

Sixth was male, went for Ash. Did not make it through ME2, since I decided I don't like Infiltrators and wanna import this guy again as another class.

Best toons for me so far are the first, since I did so much wrong (sniper soldier without Adrenaline Rush any!? :P) on those playthroughs and to end up with Tali was a great moment.

The second female liara faithful was great as well (better experience for my since she was my first vanguard, fav class since then) and the other "best of" for me is the male shep getting together with Jack.

SPOILER

Except in this case it holds true. She talks about the negative aspects of having a diverse Normandy crew every time I talked to her this playthrough so far, and it's the furthest I've ever got into her dialogue. Then she waves a pistol all over the place on Virmire threatening to kill Wrex just for trying to do what was right for his people. She's a total nut, and a liability to the mission. To clarify, that bothers me a lot more than her faith, and I completely forgot Liara believe in a higher power.

Ash has about two conversations where she talks about not trusting the non human members of the crew. With the right team choices on Noveria, she'll be the one suggesting sparing the rachni queen. She only shoots Wrex after he points a shotgun at Shepard. Protecting her commanding officer is solid grounds for pulling the trigger on him.

Ashley's view on the other races is pretty close to the Council's view on humans, except less extreme.  The Council doesn't hate humanity as much as it doesn't trust us.  Williams doesn't seem to have it in for any of the non-human crew just because of their non-humanness.  It's that the Council and Citadel races have not been very nice to humanity and she has EVERY reason to question their motives.  I felt more or less the same as her for about the first half of the game.  I was also initially nervous about people who had not sworn the oath and put on the Alliance military uniform having free run of a very advanced warship.  But, they all proved themselves in time.

I'm doing another playthrough where I go with Liara instead just for variety, but it's tough.  You just wanna like Ashley when she says stuff like "This is my idea of a romantic time.  Taking a long, slow walk on the beach....shooting badguys with my boomstick."

Are people still going on about Ashley's supposed 'racism'?
Jeez guys don't you know? Making inane and broad generalizations about Ashley's really very mild prejudices is sooo last year.

OT:
I always picked Ashley, I liked her more than Liara on a personal level. Liked her attitude, thought she was tough and prickly but with a nice side as well and was more fun to talk to, for my view.
Ashley always seemed like the right choice for me anyway, she felt like a real flawed human character and while I have nothing against Doctor T'soni, I certainly preffered Ashley.
For what it's worth I have consistantly stayed faithful save for one relatively minor playthrough of Mass Effect 2 where I romanced Jack. But otherwise, Ash is my woman.

I always choose Ash and yes I have and will stay faithful, though I do have mulitiple playthroughs one of which is a cheater with Miranda. As an athiest or agnostic at best Ashleys faith (which I think is mentioned once maybe twice) does not bother me in the slightest I respect that she has beliefs and admire her more for it.

As for her views on the alien members of the crew (again mentioned once or twice) I think it is more than understandable given her familys history, I can never understand why people throw the racist card at Ashley when Tali openly supports Genocide of the geth.

I have so much trouble deciding.  Ashley's cool.  She's a good troop, and reliable to a fault.  Liara is pure hearted and sweet, which is probably a good thing for Shepard considering how much darkness he faces.

In ME2, however, I'm drawn to Tali as well.  She's very nice, and so very cute when she's nervous.  There's just no way to do this without hurting someone's feelings, is there :crying:

My initial character romanced Ash that I imported to ME2.  I had a hard time though, with the Lair of the Shadow Broker quest.  Liara is really a good girl too, and you can't help but want to help her out.  Her devotion to Shepard is obvious in that mission.

@A.J. Ross: Tough it out and keep talking to her. Seriously, once you get past the bumpy first impression, you'll see she's not all bad. You have no idea how many squadmates I initially hated until I made an effort to get to know them.

I had no relationship in ME1 but in ME2 I picked Tali first but decided she was over rated and told the Migrent Fleet about her father and started a relationship with Miranda.

This here.  I liked Kaidan a lot as my second in command once I talked to him.  I really liked the way he would give it to me straight when I needed input.  He also seemed to have a pretty amazing ability to read between the lines and catch the things that weren't obvious on the surface.

I've romanced Miranda once, but wasn't impressed at all because her conversion seems too convenient. It could be poor writing on Bioware's part, but I kept a save with her because I'm hoping that she'll betray my Shepard in ME3 and remain consistent in her Cerberus loyalty. And then I'll feed her to Jack.

oh... not this thread again...

Anyway, I chose Ashley with all my DudeSheps.

Kaidan and Liara were reserved for FemShep.

Always Chose ash if she was making it off of Virmire the one time I didn't romance her I had to leave her there to give Liara a fair shot. I mean how could you NOT choose a reasonable woman who can look out for herself , works hard, is loyal, and doens't take crap from anyone? Liara's great don't get me wrong, I love her character, but Ash is the bomb.
