For Venezio Shepard: faithful to Liara.

For Alistair Shepard: Ashley in ME1, Tali in ME2.

For Toni Shepard: faithful to Ashley

I like sweet girls.
I went with Liara, but, as all good ME fans do, I have other playthroughs with Ash as a LI.
They're both great characters and it was kinda hard for me to choose, too. But, Ash's apparent racism was the difference in it for me.
In ME2, I'm doing the same. Having a different LI every playthrough, but probably NEVER remaining loyal (since they didn't stay loyal to me and help me stop the Collectors). Tali's my main girl, Miranda on my renegade playthroughs, with Jack as a LI for the playthroughs I went with Ash.
Although, after LotSB, I'm tempted to stay loyal to Liara...

None. Liara was too clingy and Ash was dead.

I went with Ashley....Liara seemed too willing to me, Ash, you had to work at it a bit...not much more but some.

Full Disclosure: I had multiple play throughs and did pick Liara too.

Ashley. Purely because my Shep is human-centric. Not xenophobic, just not willing to mix with other species in that manner. I kind of found her character to be a bit boring though. I always "cheat" on her in ME2. lol

I went with Liara pretty much every serious playthrough. My Shepard is fascinated by other species and is an autodidact science-savvy guy himself rather than a working-class, down-to-earth human, and so there seemed to be a natual, immediate and mutual attraction between Liara and him.

Ash.
Basically, I've only found her (and Kaidan's in case of female Shepard) romance option to be developed enough to count as a romance actually fitting in the story. Well, that's true for everything in ME1 really, it was more developed in these aspects.
With some more radical Shepards, I'm tempted with Jack too, but it's something else; I always liked polarizing characters.

Liara was a no-go option in my case, first off we know too little about asari culture to make a real union, and secondly, in the first game she really had some issues. I know it's just gameplay versus writing element, but I couldn't take the butcher of three hundred mercenaries acting like an innocent little girl seriously. :)

For my shepherd I went for in ME1 ashley williams I disliked how liara seemed to go straight in wanting a relationship after one conversation pretty much whereas with ashley it was more realistic with getting to know each other (mostly ash though but still more than liara) and found it odd how much liara talked about sex.

for ME2 I went down the route of Miranda (as you can tell from my profile picture) but I have tried all the male shepherd romances but preferred miranda the most because I connected with miranda's character the most when going down the paragon route of romancing she really does open up to you and even gets a bit emotional of the thought of you dying again.

Whereas with Jack granted she really did open up but still did not like her as a character found her rude and annoying. (but the same can be said for ashley in ME1 so I will let those last two sections slide) but I do understand what people see in her its just that I prefer miranda over her.

and Tali is the one I really did not like (before the tali fans charge at me I will explain) for one it did not suit her profile one minute she was all normal (in ME1) being an interesting, friendly character to talk to in ME1 then out of the blue in ME2 to become someone who really really falls for you, granted she had two years to think about it all but there was no hint of at all of her wanting more when in ME1.

The romance scene with her wanting to risk her life just for a kiss seems rather extreme (granted she wants to be kissed by shepherd fully) but Tali does not strike me as the type to do something like that she is normally more cautious with anything in life because Quarians are naturally more cautious in life because in her own words 'one kiss could put me in hospital' so Quarians obviously in life play safe in such situations due to them being easily harmed from external influences.

(sorry for the long message about tali I have a big opinion on tali and I hope I do not get the fan club going all guns blazing at me lol) but I do understand why tali is popular but i just find the flaws in her story annoying and ruins the experience

Romance in ME1. Honestly I was disappointed that my Maleshep couldn't romance Tali (haven't played ME2 so I can't speak for her personality there). She came off a little whiny and a bit naive, but there's something about a girl interested in tech... Anyways, Maleshep usually settles for Ash since her personality is mostly appealing and I personally like her belief in God, especially since she doesn't come across as totally insane (congrats to Bioware for making a religious character in a sci-fi setting that doesn't polarize you against religion. That said, every time she spoke about aliens I would cringe. Racist or not, I don't like her unease with Garrus, Wrex and Tali. Ash is going to have to accept my friends :P. Not trusting Liara I can understand.

Now despite this being about Maleshep, I'm going to go ahead about my Femshep for a moment. I have to say that I was really disappointed that she couldn't romance Joker, who is considerably more likable than either Kaiden or Liara. As a result of Joker being out of the question, she usually goes with Liara because Kainden just feels too forced.

I know what you mean about Joker but in ME1 he did not have what you call much dialogue (sadly) and in ME2 he did have a lot more but I hate to say this but I doubt he will ever become a LI because he even stated in ME2 why he does not date work Colleagues I doubt he will go back on that in ME3.

Also you should play ME2 its the best of the best and you can get it quite cheap now brand new.

None. Ashley was alright, but then Virmire happened, and I chose the higher rank. She was missed. Kaidan and I would have revenge for having one of comrades fall like that.

I went with Liara, Ashley's fine but Liara is one of my favorites. Besides I also prefer Kaidan over Ashley so in most of my playthroughs Ashley gets Virmired.

Ashley in Mass Effect because both she and Shepard were Christian. Shepard stayed loyal to her in Mass Effect 2 because he wasn't unfaithful to her.

As a Tali fan...I also find hers and Shepards willingness to chance her health not that understandable...though I do end up romancing her...because I find the other choices just all too ruthless or nasty for my personal taste...But yes, I do hear you about Tali...I wish Kasumi was romancable, no health danger, no ruthless or nasty.

I was going for Williams, but then she just had to mention her fate in God (probably the christian one), so then my decision was made went for Liara and gave Ash a chance to regain her family's honor., if you know what I mean.

I went for Liara with my main Shepard, probably because I'm a shy, academic type myself and Liara's vulnerability appealed to me.

Initially I was a bit put out by Ashley's distrust of the non-aliens. Tthere's a comment she makes on the Presidium "I can't tell the aliens from the animals" which I found particularly distasteful at the time.

However, I went back and romanced her with another Shepard and I actually warmed to her quite a bit.

One advantage of going with Liara is that you can continue the romance with her into ME2 (particularly with the Lair of the Shadowbroker dlc) so you don't have to wait for ME3 to rekindle the fire, as it were :D

The Shepard that romanced Ashley is called Jack Shepard. I decided to make him a bit of a "Jack the lad" so that I could basically romance all of the M£2 girls in one playthrough! Needless to say, he's mostly Renegade!

My main Shepard stayed loyal to Liara, though. As did the femshep who went with Liara.

My other femshep romanced Kaiden in ME1 but then ditched him for Jacob in ME2. Then I re-ran her through ME2 again so that I could stay faithful to Kaiden, just to see what would happen in ME3.

At the end of the day, you want to try as many options as possible!

Regards

Julian

First time I didn't even know I could have chosen a LI (my first BW game so give me some credits), but in the second playthrough I romanced Liara, mostly because both of us are a little shy.

first I went with Liara. then on my second game (to make myself full paragon for ME2) I went with Ashley. Stupid choice actually I didn't like her because she was that tough girl kinda agressive and alot of religious jibbber-jabber.
