Hey SomeBug, you are the kind of guy who just have to explain everything to the one you bring with at a movie, aren't you?

i'm expecting the devs to hold out until the last second and remove 400k before it reaches the 1 million mark.

The devs are not in the office, they won't be until around 9am pst, that's why the counter is still getting spammed, no one to stop it.

Not at all. What gave you that impression?

I'm just trying to make sure people don't make high drama out of something so inconsequential. People talking about hacking and things like that, how BioWare really screwed this one up. I don't think people quite grasp that this is a marketing stunt, to get 1 million downloads. There is nothing sinister about it. No hoodlums in some dank, Scandinavian basement running scripts to foil BioWare's plans. Muhahahahaha.

No. It's just a poorly implemented counting system, and poorly implemented because no-one at BioWare or EA gives a damn. They were going to get 1 million downloads with their eyes closed.

By talking about this rollback, about this 'fiasco' or whatever - you are propagating the marketing machine.

If you played the demo. Good. Enjoy it. Evaluate it. Rest easy knowing that the two tiny, insignificant items you want for reaching 1 million downloads will be there when it launches. Companies don't offer something to their customers only to deny them at the last moment.

But don't talk this up as being important. As being anything other than a way to quantify their marketing. It falls within the same brackets as pre-orders.

forgot about the timezones thing.

still, i think they're expecting it.

it's the same thing with the gamestop demo. people will get hold of the codes no matter what restrictions you put upon them.

In the seconds it takes to load the page after hitting refresh, the numbers jump by about 15 - 25 'unique' users. The crap's really gonna hit the fan this time.

What a fantastic plan, Bioware guys: hey lets spam the counter in an obvious fashion, those idiots out there won't spot the obvious <_<

18,000 to go.

Honestly I figured on day 1 that they would just pad the counter if it wasn't near 1,000,000 by next tuesday.  Doesn't bother me in the slightest if they do it either, since as others have mentioned this is just a stunt to get the word out.

No what I meant was that the rolling back of the figures by an arbitrary 300k is a way of prolonging the marketing machine and keeping it in focus.

I have no doubt that someone, or some group, somewhere is artificially inflating the figures by obvious and easily detectable means.

What I meant was that talking about this fact, as though it is some grand injustice or earth shattering problem that needs immediate attention now or bad stuff is going to happen - that's nonsense.

They have maybe one guy at BioWare handling this. Maybe one guy. Who spends 10 minutes each morning checking up on things, sees a problem. Oops. Let's roll it back a little so that it keeps going accurately. There. Done. Now time to get on with my real job.

Please recognize that all press is good press. And that by making this an issue, by appropriating a level of outrage no matter how small to this non-event, you are providing Electronic Arts with free advertising. However little. I'm doing it too by making this post. We all are merely cogs in the marketing machine.

Why does anyone care whether a demo of a game reaches one million legitimate downloads or not? As the end consumer, it makes no difference to you or anyone you know whether the number has been artificially inflated. All BioWare need to do is check back the numbers to avoid a 'BioWare inflates download figures' headline on Joystiq and they can get back to real work. Which they have done. Stop turning this into something. It's nothing.

People really think that Bioware are padding the counter?, seriously?

Any intelligent person would have worked out the average required over the next 3 days and spread it out, NOT push it to 1000000 with 3 days left to go.

Well it does look better if they hit 1,000,000 in half the time, makes it seem like a hot game that everyone will be playing. Yes there are some people who buy games just because the masses deem it popular enough.

*shrug*

Also, 10,000 to go.

I wake up and we are back up 400k. Someone spamming again? You would think that BioWare would have fixed that by now.

I guess what is unclear whether the counter is counting the number of downloads or the number of game connects to EA's servers. The latter would be harder to spam, and would include X-Box and PS3. If it is the former, they should just take the counter down.

So what? We won't receive the items just because the counter reach 1 million download. It's Bioware who will decide if we get the items or not.
