Unlike halo, COD, Gears of War, that get that many copies sold in just the first week or so. It is just one of those sad facts of life that the RPG genre may actually die out.
Don't you say that. Don't you ever say that.
*holds back tears*
Keep in mind that many of those games their sales also drop off to nearly nothing after that initial rush. The rush lasting depending on availability of copies. A little longer when copies are a bit harder to come by. Other game genre's don't quite follow that same trend with exception of maybe sports games.
So RPG's aren't necessarily going to go anywhere just because they don't have quite the same initial burst that certain others do.
Very true. Most RPGs spread in popularity by word-of-mouth, while shooters are typically so hype-blasted that people can't help but make it a day 1 purchase and then stop playing it when they get bored with it or when another hype-blasted FPS comes out. Menewhile people are still buying and playing RPGs from10 years ago.
The RPG genre will never die out really...difference between an FPS and an RPG is mainly the fact that when people get bored of an FPS, it does die out...look at Crysis and Crysis Wars online...there's a few stragglers here and there, but it might as well be dead...it's worse for Unreal Tournament III...whereas people are still playing games like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Diablo...etc, countless years after the "hype" for them ended.
You can always go back to an RPG and still enjoy it...FPS games...they eventually die to a point where you might as well uninstall it/snap the disc in half. Even if sale numbers are higher for FPS...it's a short-lived thing compared to RPG's that tend to last a lifetime because of how memorable they are.
