Right. I'll try it again.

Wish there's a way to log onto the server mid-game... The demo is way too long to be replayed in one sitting.

[/quote]

Umm, I played it 3 times through in one sitting.

Seriously, the demo takes around 20 to 30 minutes if you skip all the dialogues and just go for a speed run. If you don't I would say you go to an hour, maybe.

At this rate, which is about 20 downloads per minute or 28,800 downloads per day, we wont reach 1 million in time!!! we will be about 100k short....

You know, if it gets really close at the end... like say, 960,000 or thereabouts, I'm gonna call BS.

EA has removed about 600,000 from the counter due to what they considered "spamming downloads" or whatever.  So the question will arise:  did they make a 100% positive identification for every one of those that they removed?

I agree with Yrkoon. If we don't make it then i call foul play. it will be almost as controversial as the 2000 presidential election.

How does Bioware/EA know that they're not pulling legitimate downloads. My son and I downloaded the game for each of our computers, we've purchased 2 copies of the game. He has a specific email he logs into and I have mine, so that's two legitimate downloads in one household. I'd like to know how they know they're all spam downloads.

They don't know they are just taking away some random number after it gets spammed. They said they were only gonna count if you logged in through your EA account but thats not how the counter works it just counts downloads period so I don't think they have a way to tell the difference between legit and spam.

^So basically, this is a mass of BS on their part. Yet another promotional experiment gone terribly wrong. <sigh>

In that case,  screw  them.  We reached a million downloads last thursday.  And I for one, am done playing their little "call to arms" thing.

::: honorably discharges himself::::

Wow, what a great promotion! If I'm interested in the game, I will download the demo anyway. But if I'm not, than 2 stupid, useless in-game item won't convince me.

So how exactly does it get spammed if it only registers once and only if you download it when logged into an EA account?

EA and Bioware know the actual numbers. What you see on the counter is NOT the actual numbers.

You see the buttons for downloading the demo? Each press of that button adds one more count to the counter.

What was happening was some hacker/spammer had set up a system to have that button be pressed a TON of times in seconds, so that the counter would go up.

The demo wasn't actually played.

This happened twice, both times where said system caused 300,000+ ghost "demo played" counts added to the counter when in reality no one had played it that many times.

They stopped the system from doing what it was doing and they rolled back the counter to fit what was ACTUALLY the amount of demo downloads.

So people calling bull on Bioware and EA need to learn their facts instead of assuming that they just took away a random number like 300,000 away from the votes to generalize how many were ghost clicks.

If we don't hit one million, its because we actually didn't hit one million.

Not because Bioware and EA think that removing votes would somehow convince us to do even more promotion for them when they hit their goal ahead of schedule.

I mean, how does that even make sense? Its better for you to say, "We hit our 1 million mark in two days" than, "We hit our 1 million mark in one week".

LPPrince - that's my guess too. The counter just shows the number of clicks, and periodically they update it with the real figure, which comes from logins.

If they count the download with only your ip adress I guess only one will be counted

No there wasn't. There were people who misclicked, had to restart their downloads, download managers that split files into multiple parts, people who downloaded demos for every platform they own ... Those alone would more than triple the amount of downloads counted IF indeed the counter was tied to how many people just downloaded the thing. There may have been one or two adolescents who who snickered and downloaded it a few times, but that thing is 2GB. Not a casual download, and again, HOW the downloads were counted is not known. People speculate between needing to log in AND complete the demo, to just opening the damn webpage.

What is fact is that Bioware has complete control over the counter and the DLC. It does not matter how many people have legitamately played the demo. They could have gotten 5 million downloads, but the fact of the matter is that they don't want the promotion to be over yet. It is in their interest to force the demo to spread outside of the existing fanbase, so they'll doctor the number to make it look like we're close, but we better start Facebookin' or else we wont get that [mystery] amount of gold that DLC gives!

They've made up some BS about hackers and spammers, because people do actually do things like that. For stupid stuff, too. This? It was a marketing stunt from the beginning. It doesn't matter if 5 people or 5 million people downloaded. It has to last a while, but instead of just admitting they undershot the target number, they make up some lie about hackers. Damn us for trying to cheat them!

Right.  Is it time for me to play lawyer now?

Here's Chris Priestly's post, in its entirety, from page 1.

Chris Priestly wrote...

Dragon Age players, this is your call to arms! We need one million players of the Dragon Age 2 demo and we want you to rally the troops to reach this monumental goal. Tell your friends, tell your family, talk about it on Facebook, Twitter, talk about it at school and at work. We want One Million downloads of the Dragon Age 2 demo and we need you to rally the troops to reach this goal.

If we reach One Million downloads, we will reward players with 2 new in-game items the Lothering’s Lament and Far Cliffs of Kirkwall tomes. And don’t forget, anyone who completes the demo will get the in-game item Hayden’s Razor. All 3 items will be available on all platforms for Dragon Age 2.

We need you to rally your troops and heed this call to arms!

Read more details on the Call To Arms

^No where in that post (at least) does it say that we have to  log in to our EA accounts in order for the downloads to count.  It merely says we have to log in  if we want to receive the items (Hayden's Razor, etc.).

As for the whole clicking thing, EA has NO Idea whether  the clicks led to a full download of the game or not.  They're merely guessing based on the unusual speed.  I'm sure there were "spam clicks", but there's no way to quantify them with specific numbers, which is what they did not once, but   *twice*.

No, it doesn't say it in Chris's post specifically, but the link he provided with the additional details makes it pretty clear:

"To get your download counted, you will need to log into your EA account while playing the demo."

You must log in to be counted. Like myself, I'm guessing many people have not logged in. I don't intend to, either.

I wonder if that means  your download been labeled as a spam download

If you want to keep being pessimistic and think of Bioware and EA as the bad guys, go ahead. But maybe once you should accept the fact that the fault might be on the FANS rather than the developers/publishers.

Well, if we somehow manage to reach a million within minutes of march 1st, then how in the world will we be able to rationally conclude that they didn't manipulate the counter? Marketing firms are pretty good at predictions and projections, but no one is THAT good.

Pessimistic is blaming the counter legitimately reaching its goal on hackers and spammers, and then calling those people "the fans." People have repeatedly said they downloaded the demo X number of times for X number of consoles. Why jump the "hackers" conclusion? That's ugly. And the people who said that are: tah-dah! Bioware.

Ok this is wrong. I was on the demo page looking at the download count a couple days ago. At that time it said it was OVER 1 million downloadsImage IPB. When i got back on another day to see how many downloads the demo got the count was dropped to around 800,000Image IPB. Seriously Bioware WTF did we get over 1 million or not?

You're being oversensitive, they've made no reference to 'fans' just 'people.'

We have noticed some people spamming the demo that has caused incorrect numbers on the download counter. As such, we have to remove roughly 300k from the counter to correct the false numbers.

People continue to try to spam teh numbers. We catch and remove the false numbers.
