Seriously i'm a LONG standing bioware fan and i love most if not all of there past games but playing DA: O through finally(had it since launch but i always got bored or got a new game) i find that while i have FINALLY made it further into the game... i am totally put off by enemies can INSTANTLY slaughter anyone in your group at will. This one ability totally kills the game for me. I wouldn't mind if was some kind of defense but by the time you " cast " any kind of spell to CC the guy they either A: resist it or B: its to late. I do not and can not STAND abilities in any game that instantly SLAUGHTER your characters with no defense at all! at least in D&D are saves or spells that can grant reistsances NOPE not in DA: O! YOU just die! i am sorry but if this ability exists in DA 2 in same form its in DA: O i have no desire to play it. Its ridiculas ability has no place in the game its quite often diffcult enough with out giving enemies an ability to insta gib anyone they choose! lets forget it if are for of them and they aren't bunched up! cause they will use overwhelm on every one of your characters and you die.

I wanna know name of the guy who decided this ability was a good idea so i can kick him in the nuts -.-

/rant off!

Dragon Age: Origins is a team-based game. You are supposed to use a party of heroes to conquer the challenges laid out for you. Use your allies to save you.

Any spell causing almost any effect, be it freeze, knockdown, paralyze, etc. will do the trick very nicely.

Exactly. But sometimes it doesnt matter and the one whos in the 'death grip' still wont make it out.

I look at the overwhelm as just a way to still give a "challange" only it isnt a challange and is rather just plain cheap, if they still remain in DA2 I hope we get the option to mash a button to escape quicker, rather then just lay there and take it.

Yeah, shield bash will do it. Anything that does knockdown or stun pretty much.

Dog, wolves, warewolves, children (Awakening), and the Ogre's Grab is similar.

So, the OP wants a game where the enemies have no knockdown effects or anything similar?

Well . . . .ummmm . . . okay.

Then that's your fault as a player for not planning on it or reacting in enough time.  If a Werewolf makes it to your backline, it's going to get ugly.  It should get ugly.

As players, we are given a ridiculous amount of unbalanced or flat-out broken abilities in Origins (to say nothing of Awakening).  Throwing the enemies a bone here and there isn't out of line, especially when Overwhelm can be stopped through so many methods.

And if you're playing solo, then you're playing the game in a way the developers probably didn't intend to be the baseline experience, and should take that into consideration.

DA:O? Well, wrong forum, but you'll be happy to know that they took it out of DA2 - I think. I have this vague memory of a dev mentioning it a while back. In any case, aside from the other suggestions: rogue stun(s) work, shield bash, the force field thing...freezing the enemies while they're busy using Overwhelm. Not sure, but Crushing Prison might work too. Oh, I think that bard song might work too, but I have tried it (uh, the final bard ability - Song of Captivation?).

Yo get a tank and give them shield defense and they never get knocked down. Plus get crowd-conrtolling abilites for your mage like force field, crushing prism, fireball, cone of cold, horror, etc. Or if the game is to hard just go to a easier difficulty.

My best tip for you is to take shield bash and pommel strike out of your warriors' tactics queue so you have a knockback off cooldown all the time. If you're currently being hit with overwhelm you can then use one of these knockbacks to break the victim free.

I think OP was just saying it sucks to have someone instantly taken out of the fight and likely killed. Which it does, but it's supposed to suck. I think they wanted to make it an "OMG THEY OVERWHELMED LELIANA" kind of thing. You have to instantly change your tactics to counter the impending death of a teammate.

IIRC if you have enough armor/defense you can eat an overwhelm and not die, too, it's just a bit annoying. And get your phys resist up.

It's nowhere *near* as cheap as crushing prison or curse of mortality--you can still heal them or knock them out of it somehow.

Yup overwhelm was over powered. The one I hated worse is the stun every one in your party by hitting one of them with a freaking arrow.

I usually get my healer to heal and group heal. By the time both spells are cast the enemy stops using the ability.

Actually fireball was the most unfair move in the game. Especially since the enemy always casts it faster than you.

Or you could just use Survival + Mana Clash to hit enemies from two rooms away and leave their allies none the wiser.

Overwhelm has been castrated in unspecified ways. Should be more fair now.

Actually I think it's great. One of my best moments in the game was walking through Blackmarsh. My human noble, Ohgren, Anders and Sigrun. Two elite shadow wolves decloak behind us, leap on Anders and Sigrun and slaughter them, then come at us. Incredibly atmospheric, and actually got the blood pumping as a battle.

As some people said any cc breaks it. Root, stun, knockback etc. Also magic shields keep you from taking dmg. I know it is especially bad in the werewolf lair because they are so many so you have to keep them comming. What's good is a champion/templar two-handed sword style. For once you have better resists and also you have 3 area ccs just with your tank alone. My mages used to be healer and ccer, that's really it. The rest is up to dps.
