It doesn't matter : whatever you decide to use will be randomly resisted when you really needed it to work.

IIRC if you have enough armor/defense you can eat an overwhelm and not die, too, it's just a bit annoying. And get your phys resist up.

Not true - I watched my tank die from werewolf overwhelms in Awakening - over 500 health gone in seconds.

Lol.....really? You may want to try a lower difficulty level, I didn't find any abilities too overpowered (at least from the enemy), like everybody else already said, overwhelm can easily be stopped with any CC ability and there are lots of those. I loved it when enemies wasted their crushing prison since then I could just use force field to take it off my party member, force field is also great whenever one of your teammates gets grabbed by a dragon or an ogre. Fireball was a bit annoying but that's why I always send my warriors in first so they're the only ones getting hit while I set the rest of my team on those pesky mages. The only spell that I found really irritating in origins was curse of mortality but it wasn't overpowered, just really really annoying. Players on the other hand had countless of overpowered abilities that made the game way easier (i.e. mana clash, blood wound, the AW spec)

You mean, the ability Dog had?  Posted Image

Dog, wolves, warewolves, children (Awakening), and the Ogre's Grab is similar.

So, the OP wants a game where the enemies have no knockdown effects or anything similar?

Well . . . .ummmm . . . okay.

No. He wants a knockdown effect that you can resist. Overwhelm works 100% of the time, even if you have a sword and shield warrior that's immune to knockdowns.

Or a two handed warrior with Indominatable activated.

Bah.  Things like this make the game fun.

Annoying sometimes, but fun.

Well what really sucked was that they could charge and overwhelm while you were walking around like a retard. I am glad the new combat in DA2 is faster paced, even though I have seen the same silly combat-walking animations. A bit faster maybe.

More importantly, OP... YOU can get overwhelm too ! I hated it as well when ennemies used it on me but wait until your Dog, Master Shapeshifter forms or Ranger pets get it too ! Then the laughs will be on your enemies. Btw, you can adjust the difficulty at any time through the options menu.

Ajusting level is meh though. I always play different levels from normal to insane, but I stick with the level I chose at start. If I'd change the level I'd feel like I screwed up the playthrough.

It was by the far one of the bloodiest abilities. I kinda gagged when I first saw it lol, its disgusting when spiders use it.

It was great when one of the Children tried it on my Warden Commander, only for him to get up afterwards, having only lost a few points in health, and proceed to bring the pain.

As soon as you knew CC broke it, it was easy to counter.

I hated overwhelm.

But I loved turning Morrigan into a giant spider and having her pin enemies down and tear out their organs. Pity shapeshifting sucked.

Obviously you aren't managing hate well. A warrior with up to par gear will survive overwhelm with almost 100% of his health still left. My warrior warden took like 1 damage from overwhelm on nightmare. Your other party members shouldn't even be touched by mobs at all especially with all those hate generating skills available for warrior. I hope they keep overwhelm or the game may be too easy.

Shapeshifting is AWESOME if you make your stats right. My shifter in spiderform hits for 120-140 a hit AND with haste it gets all the more OP, swarm is still crappy though.

Can it be taken away from spiders at least? Spiders completely freak me out already, so much that when I fight them I usually try not to look at my screen. If one of them uses overwhelm on my character, I just completely lose it. I can't handle a spider jumping on my PC and gnawing wildly.

Nerf spiders!

OP, sounds like you're just no good at playing RPGs. Or you need to play at a lower difficulty level.

OP, I understand where you are coming from. Fighting those stupid spiders in the temple, on Nightmare they were overwhelming me every chance they got. And they mostly overwhelmed my weaker characters, too, so they almost always died (like mages or bow and arrow rogues). The problem with overwhelm is that it just lasts too long and they take off so much damage. There are hardly any moves to stun them or knock them off, so unless you kill them off they end up killing you.

For anybody who doesn't remember, overwhelm is that cheap move where a creature (most likely a giant spider) knocks you down, crawls over you and starts biting. If I didn't have a mage with powers that could enclose an enemy in cages, I might never have made it through the temple.

If you're really a 'long standing bioware fan', you should know that there is a counter-measure for everything you meet in the game.

I highly advise you to look for a way to negate it, you'll find it if you look for it. Just like in the old games.

When I was downed thanks to Overwhelm, I had my squaddies target the enemy on top of me so that when it died, I could get back into the fight.

Although usually I didn't take much damage from it anyway as I played a Sword and Shield Tank Warrior.

Well, the game can get downright unfair at certain points at higher difficulties. I like challenge in my games, but I cursed the sadist resposible for the final boss fight in Awakening in every single language I know (8 if, anyone's curious).

Getting instantly surrounded by hordes after of hordes of grubs - each one of them ignoring the tank because the mages had the audacity to cast a spell, made me hate the overwhelm move with every fibre of my being. Sure, there's a counter measure agains overwhelm; but you run out of those pretty fast when there are 50+ grubs around you all standing in line to start humping you.

I once had two of my characters overwhelmed at the same time. You guessed it, my mage and bow/arrow rogue. The spiders completely ran past my tank as if they didn't see me and beelined it to my mage and rogue. I guess it makes sense because whenever I encounter a group I immediately go kill the mage first, but really? Ignoring my tank. I was able to get knock one off my rogue but my other bash ability failed, so my mage died. Next thing you know, my tank got overwhelmed again. Seriously, it's like Nightmare turns the Overwhelm dial up to 11.

I can imagine that practically everyone hated overwhelm and scatter shot. I'm not sure that means they are supposed to be taken out. However, that conclusion is not as unreasonable as I first thought, though..

Spiders shouldn't be allowed to employ any kind of strategy. They should really just be banned from any video game ever because they are f-ing freaky, but if they have to be in it there shall be NO strategies. They're horrible enough as it is, add overwhelm (already there) and strategic thinking (potentially there) and... gah. My mind just refuses to accept any of this.
