  Since
the birth of Dragon Age Origins November 6, 2009 I have vigorously devoured every Dragon Age material out there. I'm a avid gamer, and I have always been a fan of Bioware. From the times of Baldur's Gate to Mass Effect I play anything with Bioware on the box; however I'm being to see a trend in games these days, and it's starting to concern me. This next part of my thread will either get this post closed or moved. I have a confession. I am Roman Catholic. I'm not talking about those people who just say Catholic because they don't know their religious preference, but I'm like full blown Catholic. I was raised with a rosary in my hand, and I have five brothers and sisters. I attend mass as often as I can, and I have a close friend who is a catholic brother (who is pretty much a genius when it comes to chemistry). And latetly it kind of seems like the Catholic church is getting hit harder then ever. I know bringing up real world religion is a no no ,but how can the developers honestly make the Chantry and not expect conversation like this?

My worry is people, gamers, will play Dragon Age and use the Chantry as an opportunity to reinforce their negative feelings towards the Catholic church. I know any of this is probably absurd for me to think but I can't stop reading over and over in the forums people saying, “Well the Chantry is based heavily off of the Catholic Church.” So thisnmakes me worried that maybe in the next game the main antagonist will be the Chantry, and kind of fuel the already negative vibe the Catholic Church has now.

Umm no offense and i mean no offense when i say this as i have nothing against you, but you may need to go talk to your priest.

While the chantry resembles some of the Catholic churches past, anyone who connects the 2 and looks negatively at a church based on a video game needs more help than a forum can provide.

I dont agree with the Catholic church, but i also believe that a given religious affliation wont keep you out of heaven. There were 12 tribes and whos to say that they didnt all change names to fit in to where they went in the world.

Anyway before they lock this man, i would go have a serious talk with your priest about you fears over a video game, afterall a video game is a alternate universe that is not real.

The Chantry's just a fictional religious institution. Might it be based in part on the Church? Sure, I guess. But my feelings toward the Chantry are completely independent of my feelings toward the Church. No rational person would play Dragon Age and come to the conclusion the Church is bad.

It all comes down to separating the fiction from the truth, and in this case it's easy, because it's not even a fictionalized version of the Church. It's a fantasy religion that has as much in common with Catholicism as it does with any other Abrahamic religion. No one in their right mind could confuse them.

If any game was going to give Catholics a bad name it would be Assassins Creed.

You really should be bothered with what other people think of the Chantry/Catholic Church thing. People view the world through their own biases for just about anything. Somebody who hates the Catholic Church will do so no matter how accurate the parallels may or may not be in Dragon Age.

Err, yes. I'm sure you all know what a political satire is, right? It's fiction alluding to something to in real life? Do you know stories such as a A Modest Proposal, or The Rape and The Lock? I'm not fearful of a game, and though Austin I appreciate the sarcasm it tickles me, but satire and especially interactive satire (such as a game) can indeed condition someone to think a certain way even if they haven't intended it to. Any kind of literature fiction or nonfiction wishes to make a point. Even if it's subtle,

Some people will use any tools to reinforce their own beliefs. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Anyone who decides Roman Catholicism bites because of how they might perceive a video game religion/philosophy has such peculiar reasoning skills that it's not worth the time to try to change his or her mind - especially on the internet.

If it really does worry you, I echo the suggestion to talk with your priest or another who is mature in your faith.

I'm not going to bother my priest with something like this. I think you guys obviously don;t quite understand what I'm saying here.

I mean what would I say? "Father, I have a an issue. I play a video game where there is something called the Chantry, and.." And he'll interupt with, "I'm sorry son, what's a video game?"

That is what has been happening.  The philosophy of the chantry has nothing to do with Christianity. In fact, in many ways it is the opposite. However, the structure of the chantry is similar to the catholic church and Andraste's death is similar to Jesus's death. People see the obvious similarities and associate the chantry with the church. Bioware also built the chantry with numerous -obvious- flaws. People then notice the obvious flaws of the chantry and associate them with the church, and use it as a basis to bash real life religions. This happens a lot on these boards. Sometimes I wonder if this was intentional.

Andraste is the one that really bothers me. She almost mimics the life of Muhammad, but they they make the Chantry similar to the catholic church.

I think you're alright man. You clearly understand the difference between a video game story organization and real life. As for others, if people are going to use vague similarities from a video game in place of real research to educate themselves then there's not much you or anyone can do

This.

But seriously, I don't think that if the Chantry gets badmouthed in this game, one can automatically connect it with the Catholic church. They share simalarities, yes, but like some people have said already, this is a work of fiction. People will read into it what the want to. If a person seriously compares the Chantry to the Catholic church, and says that they are both just as bad, they already have their minds made up on the issue. Nobody is going to flip to one side or the other based soley on a video game.

The Chantry's main ideology is that their God abandoned them because they were sinful, and they worship this god so that he/she or it might see that they have redeeming qualities.
The Chantry is also a fictional religion.

I do get what you are saying and if its that big of a concern then i would say skip the priest and find a Cardinal that you can talk.  They may take your concern further up the chain o command and try to as a Church have something done about it.

Although if the Catholic Church does in fact try to shut down Dragon Age 2 or Bioware now know that you will be the center of the worlds ire.

Btw  i wasnt being sarcastic in anything i have said.

Really if the Catholic church was going to have problems with the way they are being portrayed in video games it should be Assassins Creed 2,brotherhood.   Afterall in AC2 your family is killed by a guy that becomes the POPE and you then execute the POPE during a mass.

Anybody who is going to play a video game  and have it reinforce their negative feelings towards the Catholic church probably didn't like the Catholic church to begin with.  I guess I don't really understand why this bothers you.  People have their prejudices and some people will equate the Church with the Chantry.  It doesn't really directly affect you, so why do you even care?

I do understand what you're saying. I'm just saying that the Chantry has more in common with Islam than with Catholicism. I'll bet that there are some people who are going to see the Church in the Chantry, but those are people who are going to see what they want to see, no matter what.

I don't think your concern is silly, I don't think you "need help." I DO think you're getting yourself into a tizzy over nothing.

I'm... uh. I'm gonna say right now that this really probably isn't the place for this discussion. I understand your concerns, but given what a hot-button issue this is, you may be better off taking it to unofficial forums where the moderation isn't as strict as it is here, or sending your concerns via email to BW directly.

Still, I'm giving it 20 minutes til thread implosion.

She's more like a Jesus/Joan of Ark hybrid.
Besides, why would it be bad if she was like Muhammad? From what I know he sounded like a nice guy.
