Yes, and the golden compass is also a fictious story. Now go read aboutt he authors intent. Jeese, connect the dots guys.

Philip Pullman is not BioWare. BioWare don't intend the Chantry to be a demonization of Catholicism. They just took some real-world religions as inspiration to create their fantasy religion. And, for the record, regardless of whether or not I agree with Pullman's agenda, they are absolutely fantastic novels. Just as I'm sure DAII will be a fantastic game.

I'm... uh. I'm gonna say right now that this really probably isn't the place for this discussion. I understand your concerns, but given what a hot-button issue this is, you may be better off taking it to unofficial forums where the moderation isn't as strict as it is here, or sending your concerns via email to BW directly.

Still, I'm giving it 20 minutes til thread implosion.

lol if this doesnt end up in flames, I think we get an achievement.

The Chantry is not Christianity.

Arguing about religion on the internet is bad.

The Chantry is mapped closely enough on the Catholic Church for people to make the connection themselves without Bioware having to come out and call it that. Does it perpetuate young leftist hate for organized religion? Absolutely. That said, there's nothing you can do about it except try not to worry too much.

Take it easy. The Chantry is too inferior, flawed and unrealistic. You can't possibly make such comparison.

The divinity of Andraste is nothing to compare to the divinity of Jesus.

And the Maker is too humanoid to match the description of "Father in Heaven".

Ignore the Chantry. Make joke with it, if you must. After all it's just a fiction.

Arguing about religion anywhere is bad.

More wars have been started and fought because of religion than anything else in history.

Well, I can't wait till Dragon Age comes out, and I LOVE the Witcher which also kind of have a bastard version of catholicism, so nothing bioware will cause me to stop playing the game.

Also, who says the Chantry is "bad"? Mages almost destroyed the world. They keep them in check. A necessary function. They also do a lot of charitable and humane work for refugees and the like. If anyone makes a negative connection based on that, it's because they already harbour ill feelings for a similar real-life institutions.

My intention wasn't to argue religion, but I guess if you make reference to one everyone wants to put in their own, so I guess I apologize.

More wars have been started and fought because of religion than anything else in history.

An incorrect, naive and lazy assumption. Religion was used as a motivator of the people. Rulers always had economic reasons for beginning a war. They needed the support of the people, however. It was much easier to rally the people do saying "Do it for (insert deity here)!" instead of "We need additional resources to support our rapidly expanding metropolis infrastructure!" And there were always other ways to motivate the people if religion wasn't working. Refer to The Terror or WWI/II. I wrote a paper on it that netted me a degree. :P Religion didn't start wars - it was merely a convenient excuse for it.

This thread needs to be copy and pasted all over the internet to show that a public forum can have a discussion on religious subjects and it didnt end up with someone threating to blow someone else up.

Quickly, lets detrail the conversation and talk about how everyone in the world should get together and laugh.

Yet siding with the templars was the clearly wrong choice in Origins. That choice led to the execution of obvious innocent mages and children outside the corrupted region of the tower.

^this

Cause while the other guys has good points about some certain wars, if you research others even further back into history(not just the last 100 years) there were alot of wars fought based on religion alone. Whether i was to defend ones ideaology or to try and force ones beliefs on others.

If you can wait a few days until I get back to my home computer, I can message you a copy of my thesis, if you don't mind nosing through 50 or so pages of pedantic terminology and copious referencing.Posted Image My defense of it netted me an advanced B.A. in History/Anthropology and Religious Studies (note, not Theology). My studies focussed on Early Modern Christianity (ie. 200-500 BCE) and the Reformation era (~1500-1700 BCE).

Actually I would love it. I go to Michigan State Univeristy for Biochemistry so I'm used to pediantic terminology. I'll give you my email if you'd like.

You know what send it to me. I would love to read a real thought out arguement to what most people just accept as fact.

As long as we can all agree that your paper may be supported by some facts, but that it is not the be all end all of the discussion.

All I know is, I was raised a diet Catholic, im a non practising Catholic, but if they ever discovered a tomb protected by

actual talking spirits

high dragon

immortal guardian

Which then led to, an urn said to contain the ashes of Jesus Christ

I would be in church the next day, singing seriously loud
