As for the diamond icon, I think it represents the neutral response (there was always one of those in ME right between the paragon and renegade responses).

They were so slow in origins, that the new ones look like they're hyped up on crack in comparison.

[The cures weren't there to be picked up. This is my core complaint with the paraphrase system in the first place. Not enough information is being made available to the player.
That the problem arose even in DAO should have been enough to warn BioWare off from making it worse by adding the paraphrase system.
Though, wouldn't this particular problem be erradicated by the paraphrase due to icons like a heart to know when you are flirting? If there had been an indication that the line was flirty, then no one would get ninjammanced. I don't see how the paraphrase makes the problem worse in this respect.(Whether or not it does in other areas in another issue entirely...for now.)

Do you subvocalise when you read? Maybe that's the difference.
Typically, if we're referring to the same concept. And that answers the "hrm" and "confuzzled" posts, too.
So when I play The Witcher for example, I hear the line as written with my internal voice (I don't read it out loud to myself, if that's what people are assuming) and then hear it with my ears when Geralt says it . I hate that.

Oh! Now I get what you meant, Upsetty. It does looks very annoying to read a line in a voice and hear the character saying it in his voice, especially if he uses a tone that seems off.

It's also related to why I dislike the silent protagonist in an otherwise fully voiced game, the inconsistency of having to constantly swap between "hearing" internally and hearing audibly bugs me. . I just find it irritatingly jarring. I have other issues with the silent protagonist as well, but that's one of the big ones.

As camps are quickly forming to turn this into another one of those threads, let me just duck in with actual info: colour and location on the wheel link the nature of the tone icons. The diamond is charming, an alternate of the humorous tone that is not about cracking wise. That way when the context is, say, someone’s mother crying over their dead child, you still have a lighter-mood comfort option that won't necessarily cause Hawke to reach over and honk her nose.
And yes, it will all be fully documented in the manual.
Sounds good. THanks for the update.

Sternly realistic, dispassionate...
EDIT: and now stuff just doesn't make sense anymore.

Diamond = charming? How... in what world does that make sense? How does "This is no time to mourn" in any way, shape or form equal charm? Regardless of the harsh tone Hawke uses. There's no alternate of any humour in it, and no making light of anything when the 'diamond' option is chosen.

Depends what the other options are.
It's not charming. Hawke literally says "If you fall apart now, you endanger us all" right after Bethany dies when the diamond dialogue option is chosen. I feel silly saying that a developer, who is far more 'in the know' than I am is wrong, but I think Lukas must have been mistaken. For one, a diamond makes no sense as an icon for a charming response, and the reaction Hawke gave definitely gave off an 'unsentimental bastard' vibe. There was nothing light or slightly humerous about his tone or delivery either.
Could have gotten it confused with the mask icon, which (as we've seen) also comes with a purple colour. Colour definitely doesn't seem to be the method to judge intent, you've got to look at the icons too. I imagine romance and aggression both share a colour (red), and picking one instead of the other could certainly send a conversation in a whole new direction.

The "charming" option wasn't chosen in the video. They chose the "jerk" option.

It doesn't sound overly charming to me either. The first option is the only one that doesn't make you sound like a dick.
