Lets say I have a me1 playthrough I import to me2 and finish etc. Can I go back and use the me1 playthrough I used for the me2 playthrough without altering the me2 game?

If you're asking whether you can re-import that ME1 file for another ME2 playthrough, then the answer is a resounding yes. I've imported the same ME1 character at least three times across multiple, different playthrough's.
