This. And my rogue will be awesome while doing it.

Seriously, I can twirl my hands in the air a little bit, remember I have no control over magic, and a huge grizzly bear just pops by my side in a cloud of smoke. My will is so strong that not only can I jump to the top of Fort Drakon, I can honestly make a half ton animal appear near-instantly at my side.

Who needs magic?

Who needs mages?

What bothers me the most, in truth, is that the flashy stuff happens all the damn time, so what is supposed to Wow you is just reduced to being business as usual, it's just a guy swinging a 6-feet long claymore like a bamboo stick, move along, nothing special to see here. Origins also had flashy stuff in killing blows; stuff like decapitation or 2-handers impaling people with their blades were brief and added flair to the combat because they were relatively rare. Same with the ogre and dragon killing animations; they were over-the-top, but very rewarding because you get to see you hero take down a huge beast in stylish fashion very few times in the game.

On the other side of the fence, DA2 excpect us to be impressed for the 500th time when a simple swing of my sword takes 2 backflips to take... only to remove 1/10th of a baddie's HP. Uh. What Do You Mean, It's Not Awesome?. http://tvtropes.org/...tle8px80d2wm3pd

The nitpicking on this board is epic...

In an epic fail type way. My gods it is a video game based on Dragons and elves and ****ing magic. Seriously, what kind of immersion do you need? Quit trying to totally escape your lame life.

It makes the game look aesthetically pleasing, also it adds a more action look to teh game and probably helps them establish the faster pace of combat they are looking for. Other than that, does it actually matter, NO!!!

The whining on this forum is entertaining yet slightly grating. I for one think it makes combat look way more dynamic....

There's nothing wrong with over-the-top action, by  the way -- it's just that, at this point, you have a pretty solid idea after playing Dragon Age on how the world works. Warriors or rogues can't display superhuman feats if we just go by what we've seen in the first game, unless they make pacts with spirits or are somehow otherwise helped by magic; it wouldn't make much sense to dismiss that now 'just because it's a fantasy setting'.

I disagree with the assertion that rogues and warriors in DAO couldn't perform super-human feats.

My rogue could turn invisible while surrounded by a swarm of enemies. My warrior could yell so powerfully that the enemies he was facing would fly backwards onto ground. Bards, who supposedly have no magical powers, can stun enemies with their "song."

Are the animations in DAO less flashy? Yup. But the actual abilities of the characters are no less fantastical.

This is all that needs to be said, really.

Pretty much, the animations just caught up:)

I get the feeling people want to see Hawkes weight lifting gym or a rogues Ninja Warrior training obstacle course or something. Like one of the formulaic action movies where the first 1/3 of the show is always showing the crazy training they do, before running out to be a one man army.

I just assume they are extremely skilled, best of the best. Our heroes and companions are legends, shapers of the world, slayers of dragons and gods(well maybe not that). I'm fine with them doing some things that look impossible compared to a common foot soldier or re-enactment hobbyist.

Ah, I take it that this is the selective realism thing where people say magic is okay and 125-slot backpacks are okay and carrying around gear that should probably weigh as much as an elephant in those 125-slot backpacks is okay but rogue abilities are not okay...because they're not realistic enough.

Carry 200 pieces of armor. Fine.

No, that wasn't fine.  That was silly, and I objected to it.

Magic that can shapeshift people into giant corrupted spiders. Fine.
Magic that can freeze people, or burn them alive. Fine.
Giant spiders. Fine.
Darkspawn. Fine
Dragons. Fine
Elves. Fine
Dwarves. Fine.
Werewolves. Fine.

These are all part of an internally consistent setting.  There's no reason to object to any of these beyond simple aesthetics.

Special warrior or rogue ability... OMG WHERE IS TEH EXPLANATION

These abilities appear inconsistent with the rest of the world as it has been revealed to us.

no they're not. shrieks are rogues and were disappearing and reappearign elsewhere all through origins.

Koreans are definatly not over the top, this looks pretty plausible to me!

I'm going assume that's sarcasm. Anyhow, you should take a look at Blade & Soul, that's much more plausible!

Now we see rogues and warriors able to do all sorts of supernatural things-teleport behind people, reduce whole crowds to atomized flesh, land blows that somehow cause explosions, etc, all appearantly without magic.
Varric's embellishments aside is there going to be any explanation for this over the topnesss? Or is this just the rule of cool at work?Posted Image

it is simple

The devs arived to the conclusion that mages were the "cool" class

I mean come on....shooting lightning from their eyeballs....passing gas SO epicly vile that people die from inhaling it, making people explode ala Hokuto no Ken...
So they were faced with the choice of wither A: bump mages down to the level of Rogue/Warrior or B: bump the Rogue and Warriors up to be as satisfying as mages

they Chose be and I'm ok with it

I have it on good authority that Dragon Age 3 will include gunblades and gravity-defying hairstyles.

Usually being shot in the head with an arrow is enough to kill you.

In Dragon Age you can:

Take multiple arrows to the body and then walk it off like nothing happened.

You can be set on fire and walk away without burns.

etc.

So really, this being a computer game means you can't really complain about "realism".

Just enjoy it.

Actually reminds me. Why do arrows always disappear? If get hit with an arrow I want at least keep it.

No they don't. Not only is this purely your opinion - but it's a flawed one at that.

Christopher Nolan brings the Batman franchise into realistic realms -> huge success

But Batman is just a comic!? Things don't need to make sense!..Guess what, it's not that simple.

"It is just a video game" or "it's fantasy" does not just justify everything.

Would LotR have the same success if Aragorn suddenly started shooting lazers from his eyes, or Frodo used Hulk Smash?

I my self like to pretend that it is Varrics story we will play with all it's over-the-topness, and not what actually happened.

Same s**t as in DAO where a rouge in stealth mode is pretty much invisible and can stand in front of a mob in plain daylight few feet away without being seen. It's not because he has magic abilities but because the game shows you an abstraction of what really happens (in this case, carefully maneuvering the terrain, blending in, staying out of sight).

Mages are needed for nothing. The most OP will be templar build immune to magic and capable to AoE oneshot swordsweep a group of noobs around him, and just keep going with the help of healing potions forever. You can't even tackle him down. The only way to kill such templar would be to chain riposte/scattershot him to death.
