Know what the results would be for helping the Chantry fall apart? Well to get freedom for the mages I would think that to remove the order watching over them that has its roots very deep in society in pretty much every every country in Thedas. Well heres what the two endings would probably be if that is a decision in Dragon age 2

1) Keep the Chantry -...Well nothing really changes, Mages are still under the watchful eye of templars, maleficarum are still killed on sight.. etc etc.

2) Remove the Chantry - Mass riots and homocides across Thedas, Total war from all sides. Nearly every country participating and even the Qunari who want to take advantage of the chaos. The death toll would be somewhere between several hundred thousand to a million... probably more

Thats my opinion of what the outcome would be for making those choices. =D

You are 100% correct.  If you look at real human history, you'll see that we've retained the cultural beliefs and practices of thousands of years ago because we know that if we didn't, we would be unable to handle the change as a species and civilization would come to an explosive end.

I'm under the impression that the Chantry is going one way or the other, if only because of A) Anders, and You or Bethany will be in the party as a Mage and that is a big deal. The major plot device is just HOW it will go. Will it burn down in flames or will the templars actually peacefully succumb and realize the Maker is a bunch of hogwash?



Time will tell.

As a species.. we wouldn't come to an explosive end but removal of old religions and introductions of new ones has caused great empires to collapse in the past... And Empires dont just collapse without the cost of life..

More likely, there will be another schism. A DA equivalent of the Protestant Reformation.
Possibly brought about by Hawke.

Well, there are other options besides that.  Perhaps the Chantry could be reformed rather than destroyed altogether (and, preferably, be less hegemonic).

Yes, if the chantry were to collapse there would be a huge power vacuum throughout all of human society. There would be chaos as the nations adjust to the change. There would likely be war, and redrawing of boarders, and a lot of people would die. But it wouldn't be the first time (something pretty damn similar happened when Andraste broke the back of the Imperium) and it probably wouldn't be the last. Human nature.
