Is there any reason NOT to play a mage?

My warden character was a human mage, so I'd like to play a different class in DA:II.  It would be weird to me if the two most important people in recent history in Thedas were mages (let alone human female brunette mages who might be distant cousins lol).

But every tidbit I read about the storyline in DA:II makes mage seem like the most interesting class to play and the one that will affect the storyline the most (all the templar/chantry stuff that's been mentioned).

Have we heard of any interesting slants to the game if you play as a warrior or a rouge?

Personal preference really. Personally, I'm really excited to play a rogue, particularly an archer.

Yeah, your brother dies instead of your sister.

This is completely offtopic, but Shorts, I miss Ron Swanson. Please bring him back.

This'll probably be the first time I don't play a mage first in a fantasy game. I really hate the laser sound effect of staffs firing. Meaning I'll have to play a rogue AND stay far away from mages.

I don't think that's a good reason not to play what you want to play.

Do people think it's weird if both heroes turn out to be dark haired male warriors?  Really, the gender bit gets me, especially--it implies that something is "wrong" if "too many" women are heroes.

Was not mentioned if you play a mage that there is a hidden chance to save both, Carver and Bethany? So, we have to find out how this works?

if you play as a rogue, you get to do cartwheels.

That, and I personally don't like playing mages.

So - preference.

I don't think so.  I don't know how to find the quote, but I recall one of the writers saying the story wouldn't work right if you could save both.

This is false. One sibling always dies. If you're a mage it's Bethany. Rogue or Warrior it's Carver.

I never really maged it up in Origins, I found it boring to be honest, though when my companions hit some of those higher level spells then it got fun.

But I dunno, even though I plan to play a warrior in DAII, Mage looks SO much more active and fun, really it seems drastically improved, much more effective, more powerful, and cooler too. Hawkes final Mage robes look really bad ass.

Even if I don't play a mage right off the bat for my PC I'll definetly be rocking it and having fun playing a mage as Merrill, Bethany, or Anders in my party.

If you play as a rogue, Hawke gets a whole new line of quests involving Varric and Isabela, a tavern, and a whole lot of wenches. It also involves a lot of drinking and consequently the actual main quest is forgotten.

Pretty major if you ask me.

If you read the talent descriptions in this thread, the Rogue has been given many magical like abilities, including area of effect arrows, what waking nightmare used to be,  and the ability to pop up almost anywhere on the battle field.

From my reading of the talents the mage has been hit with a bit of a nerf stick while the other classes have been brought to that level.

You don't need to lock yourself into a mage as they've made all the classes interesting to play.

Personally, I enjoy playing as a warrior, but on a replay I hit the other available classes. They've added so many interesting things to all the classes, I can't imagine avoiding any of them. I want to try out all the bells and whistles. I even started a new game of dragon age just to get myself in the spirit of things.

There are plenty of reasons to not play a mage. Here's some off top of a very long list:

* You're not a sissy.
* You're not a prissy boy who likes to dress up in dresses.
* You're a girl who thinks robes belong in her bedroom, not in the backstreets of Kirkwall.
* You enjoy the immediate feel of someone's flesh giving way to your blade (re: #1)

Mages are not nearly as good at crowd control as a warrior in DA2 from what we've seen in the talent reveal threat.

If you want to play a character that is constantly knocking around / stunning enemies then warriors are for you. If you love jumping around / acrobatics and attacking insanely fast then rogues are for you

Honestly, this is going to be my first time playing through as a mage first - given the implications of some sort of Chantry/mage conflict being a major piece of the story, I think it will make for a more interesting story if Hawke is a mage, rather than experiencing it through how it affects his sister.

It's the hats.

And the robes.

Very unflattering.
