I love mages and will play one for my first playthrough.
BUT
There is one thing they cannot do. Inflict stabbity death.
And stabbing people is fun.

Yeah, but you can't REALLy stab. It's just a regular staff with a new skin. There's no different animations or skills involved with it.

Doesn't Hawke have that blade staff in some of the promos? See, implement for stabbity death. And yes, stabbity death is FUN.

You can't really stab things though. It's just a normal staff with a different skin. There's no difference in animations or skills.

Personally, I've never liked being the squishy guy in the back throwing around powers.

Out here in the real world, I am a weapon collector. Swords, daggers, stuff like that.

So in these games, I like to play as a warrior, in the thick of the fight taking the brunt of the damage and dealing it right back and some more on top of it.

Or even a rogue, getting even closer and stabbing anything that moves, or using finesse with a bow and arrow(or crossbow) to rain hell on enemies.

I've just never been a mage type guy. The demo will allow me to decide whether I'll play a Sword and Shield Warrior or Archer Rogue.

That's about it for me.

There are plenty of reasons to not play a mage. Here's some off top of a very long list:

* You're not a sissy.
* You're not a prissy boy who likes to dress up in dresses.

I find this highly ofensive.

As a sissy boy who likes to to dress up in dresses, I resent being lumped togather with mages. Posted Image

I had my heart set on playing a mage but the rogue gameplay just looks sublime. As much as I like hurling fireballs at people, jumping around like Altair on crack is my kind of fun.

That's true. I probably won't be able to go all Arcane Mage in this one...

Ugh... I hate mages in DA:O exclusively because Arcane Warrior broke the game. I love playing Rogue, but every time I roll up a character, I always feel inclined to play mage because I have that knowledge about Arcane Warrior and it compels me.

I'm really hoping they sufficiently balance it in DA:2 so I don't feel cheated when I decide to play a rogue of any kind.

Well I just happen to have a sister IRL, , and to me it makes the family thing more personal.

If i could have played a mage and kept Beth , i'd do that.

Awww, no more Fat Apollo? *sigh* Oh well, it seems that our mage robes still aren't sexy. If you're a fashionista, there's your reason! Hats are no longer an excuse since we have a toggle for them (hooray). The robes though...yeah. I don't know - they may very well have some nicer ones later in the game though. I'm an eternal optimist when it comes to my mages' outfits.

Ok, that's the best news I've heard since they said females no longer use the male skeleton. :P

I actually didn't play a mage all the way through until the mod community had spit out some good looking clothes for them. I'm so shallow.

Well, I guess I'm one of the last of the mage supporters. Yes, I like the dresses and yes I enjoy throwing fireballls at you 50 feet away.

Nah, your not. I still haven't been convinced.  The only really compelling argument to me is getting to keep Bethany (Carver's not giving me good vibes).  The gameplay stuff isn't a huge factor to me (the new rouge stuff seems cool though).

Also, since I'm going to play a straight female, Fenris and Anders are bound to have more interesting things to say to Mages...

I think it would be interesting to have two famous mages make an impact at a time when mages are usually reviled and oppressed. Hawke may have the chance to make the Hero's boon a reality in Kirkwall. You also have a good point about Anders conversations with an apostate Hawke. And Hawke may be related to your Amell mage.

Hehe, I have to admit that for a while I simply refused to wear a hat on my mage (or helmets on my melee characters). I was perfectly fine with making Morrigan wear a hat though. She vaguely reminded me of a sherpa while wearing one. *snicker*

I think I had that mage robe mod, but I couldn't get it to work (rather disappointed about that). Oh well, maybe if they release an updated toolkit for DA2 I'll have another chance at super-awesome robes.

story wise there might be more going on with mages but honestly, i've never liked playing a casting class character. it was never my style and i would enjoy melee gmaeplay far more than a mage.

and i honestly doubt mages will be getting much more story than nonmages, i think it will be something more like how the origins in DAO slightly affect the story or npc reactions but the overall plot will remain the same

Sibling selection.

Although, painfully enough, I'm starting to like carver as much as bethany.

I'm back to starting as a rogue after watching this video, plus rogues fit my playing style better.
