ME3 should start with whoever the LI is walking up to Shepard, telling him/her that he/she was a lousy lay in ME2 and that bumping uglies with him/her felt like being in an awkwardly animated videogame cutscene. Then said LI smooches Samara and flies off into space, leaving Shepard to shake his/her fist at the heavens.

Oh you mean break up with Shep like Ashley/Kaiden potentially do because they think you joined Cerberus but won't hear you out? Or like how Liara does with her obsession to pursue the Shadow Broker? Or like Samara does if you pursue her? Or like any potential LI does if you fail their loyalty mission?
Yeah ME2 is already full of breakup scenarios. I'm sure ME3 will have its own as well.

Yeah, I've only heard the game referred to as a space opera; which is essentially different from a soap opera, but sharing some common ground.

every character has their hate club. sometimes it gets me annoyed, sometimes it gets me pissed off and sometimes I just ignore the hate and move along. That said - not seeing attractiveness of a character as LI =/= hate. people have different tastes. me, I don't find Tali attractive, I find her sweet and adorable, so only my womanizing jerk Shepard takes advantage of her crush, every other Shepard treats her like a little sister they want to protect.
as for the OP - I really do hope that your LI breaks up with you if you went for some sexy times on a side. especially if that LI is Liara - I want her to go all cold and say: "I loved you Shepard, but you stomped all over my heart again and again, so I'll help you get the reapers but you're not welcome on this ship anymore - say good bye to all the extra minerals and credits from my profitable shadowbroker schemes."

I would like that a possible outcome for your romance is getting dumped. Then there are more possible scenarios. It makes the other ending with you LI staying with feeling all the sweeter, because you know it could have been lost. If it's just a done deal, it's nothing to fight for, perhaps it's a bit easier not to treasure it..... hm... pondering. But yes, keep a few old saves so you can go back to any major decisionmaking and pick another answer if need be. I learned that the hard way with Alistair. Still I wouldn't change. Like I said, several different scenarios are fun.

I'd prefer them not to break up permanently with you unless you have your Shepard do an action that would provide justified basis.

I think Liara has already had her "you cheated/didn't wait on me" moment in LotSB. In one of the Paragon interupts after you defeat the Asari Spectre she already knew I was "itching to get under Tali's helmet". It's my understanding that she has something to say about all the LI's along these lines. And in the end she was understanding and okay with my Shepard's choice, you know, like a responsible adult would be.
In ME3 we'll probably just face the music with the Virmire Survivor, unless they do that with the next DLC.
