Ok just a few things:

1. I got the feeling that you import your game save into BG2, correct? If so, are there any side quests I should do before moving onto the sequel? And what level should I be before I finish?

2. How much longer have I got to go (I'm halfway through Chapter 4) and is there a chance that I can win it before DA2 comes out, bearing in mind that I have gaming ADD.

3. I've heard the sequel is utterly brilliant. Without spoiling anything, how's it different from BG1?

Thanks.

Thanks.

You don't actually import the game save, but copying a save game folder across into your BG2 directory gives you the opportunity to import a character from it.  If I want to keep a character I normally export them (from the same game screen used for level up) and then copy the exported files across.  Do whatever quests you want - you can export a character at any time (you don't need to finish a game of BG1).  Assuming you have TOSC the normal maximum XP in BG1 is 161,000.  I would aim to get the maximum level associated with this (different for different classes) in order to make BG2 a bit easier if you've not played it before.

How long it takes will depend on how linear your progression is.  If you use walkthroughs and don't do sub-quests (and are happy to reload if you die) then it shouldn't take too long at all.  If you want to complete everything before moving on it would probably take you 2-3 days of intensive play.

Some of the differences that occur to me are:
- NPCs are much more interactive and have quite a lot of dialogue between themselves.
- BG2 is more geared to spell use (both by you and against you).  In BG1 you might be used to your fighter smashing through enemies with hardly any chance of being hit.  That carries over to some extent to BG2, but becomes increasingly less true as you progress through the story.
- BG2 is a bit more linear.  There are still loads of sub-quests you can do and I like it as a game, but I do miss the feeling of being able to randomly explore that you get in BG1 (but looking at others' comments I think I'm in the minority here).
- the weapon proficiency system is more refined in BG2.
- more character types are available.

If you do want the benefits of the BG2 game engine in BG1 there are mods that allow you to do this - there's been plenty of discussion about BGT and Tutu on this forum or just Google it.

I'm not a first time player, but I'll try to answer your questions properly anyway.

Yes, you can import your character.
What to do beforehand:
1) get 161K XP
2) Collect all tomes of attribute improvement and use them on your PC.
3) Take a look at the table on this page and decide what items you want to import into BG2.

Unless you're playing BGT, that's all you should be concerned about.

2. How much longer have I got to go (I'm halfway through Chapter 4)

If you simply followed the main story line, then most of the game is still untouched. If you explored everything you could in chapter 4, then you can probably expect 3 (or more) dozen more play hours, I guess (Baldur's Gate is big).

and is there a chance that I can win it before DA2 comes out, bearing in mind that I have gaming ADD.

I have no idea when DA2 is going to come out. And why are you not taking your ritalin?

3. I've heard the sequel is utterly brilliant. Without spoiling anything, how's it different from BG1?

Your NPCs come more to life through conversations among each other and with you. This is the most important difference imo. Other things are the enormous growth in power and with that a completely new spell system and game balance (which not everybody likes, but hey, at least you won't die from a single stray fireball anymore!)
Assemble your own demilich. Rid the swordcoast of it's ever-present infestation with dragons. Argue with your sword about fencing techniques. Listen as this fellow completely loses it. Complete the metallic pants set and find out what the golden pantaloons are actually good for!
And of course, finish the story.

It is possible to import your character from BG1 without actually having finished that game. Don't worry about lack of XP. The giant difference in XP between the two games makes that a minor point (and you'll automatically start with at least 89K XP), only the tomes and maybe the item should be considered before leaving BG1.

Cool, thanks for your help.

@ Humanoid_Taifun, yeah sorry about the thread title, it should have read "A few questions from a 1st time player". That does look confusing, I changed it.

EDIT: Oh, and based on your advice I've decided I'm just going to let BG simmer slowly. I'm really enjoying it and I don't want to get burnt out on it by trying to power game through it.

That's excellent advice for BG2 as well.

Dragon Age 2 comes out March 6 or 8th, so you've got some time.
