The two factors that determine how muscular someone is:

1) How much intense physical work they do, and
2) Genetics

Neither has anything to do with magic and reading (or not reading) books. This thread is awful and you should feel bad for posting it.

Apostates don't follow the same training regimen as the Circle's besides

Same reason Joker in Mass Effect is as muscular and built as badass male Shepard... cus they're too lazy / not enough time to make a separate model for different characters :)

Because everything requires resources, and not everything justifies the resources required to implement it.

Along the same line of thought... why do they wear robes?

That's what mages do. If you don't wear a robe, how can anyone even know you're a mage? It's like a wizard's hat on a wizard. No hat, no wizard - same here, no robes, no mage.

Anders answered this in Awakening... basically so they have less "work" to do when they want to have sex with someone... no need to remove clothing.. just hike up the robe :)

:D
Lol but they'd be so much safer from the chantry wearing normal clothes.

Circle Mages get exercise. Until Anders tried to escape this way, they used to swim in Lake Calenhad or something. Now they'll probably just do something else. And apostates would have something to do to keep them alive. It's unlikely they'll have professional jobs as to avoid detection so they'll probably do manual labour. The Hawke family were probably farmers in Lothering.

Weren't mages originally going to have a slimmer, less muscular look than rogues and warriors? What happened to that? Doesn't really make sense that someone who reads books, studies magic, and casts spells basically as a profession would be so cut. O_o

What keeps mages from working out and building muscles? Oh thats right nothing....

I actually think that Mages have a good reason to have some muscle on them. I like to think of magic as taking a physical exertion to use like bending was in avatar. I dislike Harry Potter type magic of wave a wand, concentrate, it's done. If you think about it in a way that casting a spell requires some physical exertion, like building up energy within you and then releasing it, then magic could be a pretty physical thing to use.

You'd rather have scrawny mages?

Mages now do a bit of melee you know...

Besides, Hawke is kind of a farm kid and all...

I think there's some validity to the observation to a point.

The game does take place in a World where there's no real "comfort" technology, though.

I mean, if you want to wash up you have to lug water from somewhere else to your rooms so pretty much everyone is going to be a little more Cut.

Maybe warriors/rogues just train hard, while mages train smart, thus achieving the same amount of training !

Personally, I've never really understood the stereotype that just because you read books, you loose all motivation and time to work out.

Well, to be fair, for Circle Mages it would make sense. Considering they don't work out much, if at all. Like Finn in Witch Hunt for example says he hated working out and they never did actually work out after one tried to escape anymore.

But for Dragon Age 2 I'm sure Hawke actually had to do quite a bit of physical labor to survive if anything.

Chances are the Mages aren't studying every waking second of every day.

It doesn't take like 6-8 hours a day of training to get into good shape. All you need is a proper diet, and between 1 to 2 hours of exercise per day.

I'm pretty sure they have the time.

I'd rather have choice than be forced to play as some steroid addled beefcake. Besides, what happened to having a happy medium? Must everything either be ridiculously out of proportion ( Hawke is rapidly approaching World of WarCraft standards ) or weak?

A surgeon who goes to the gym sometimes isn't going to be as muscular as a professional boxer.

He could if he works out enough.

Sure but it would be unusual, he would have to dedicate all of his free time to working out. Mage powers are all mental, every battle they use cardio at most while the physical attackers are heavily working their muscles fighting enemies, carrying heavy weapons and armor, etc...

I don't lift weights, but I don't think that working out for more than a hour per day would be good for most people.

I do agree with this. A middle choice would be great.

It's a resource thing. They didn't want separate character models for warriors, rogues and mages, and so everyone is built like a tank.

Is it really so bad to have muscles? If you don't want to see your mage's buff physique, then keep them covered. What can people complain about next? I'd be happy if DA2 doesn't launch full of bugs. Everything else is just minor details.
