It's a resource thing. They didn't want separate character models for warriors, rogues and mages, and so everyone is built like a tank.

From a real-world view: mages can be just as buff as warriors. It's only an hour or two of exercise (plus good diet) per day. They have the time to spare.

From an in-game view, I believe Gaider said it himself in the romance thread:

David Gaider wrote...

Different teams also means different interests. There's very few things we feel compelled we have to
put into a game-- it requires someone on the team to be actively
interested in including it. I know, on the forums, it seems like
everyone thinks a developer needs a solid reason not to put
something in a game... were content not expensive, that would be true.
But it isn't, and while we would never expect fans to care about that,
we certainly have to. So therefore you're only going to see things that
individuals on that team are specifically interested in doign... and
you're not going to see a lot of other things we'd like to include but just couldn't. We don't get our way all the time, either.

Time and money, basically.

Is it really so bad to have muscles? If you don't want to see your mage's buff physique, then keep them covered. What can people complain about next? I'd be happy if DA2 doesn't launch full of bugs. Everything else is just minor details.

BUT THIS IS A THING I DON'T LIKE SO THIS THING HAS TO BE FIXED.

Anders mentioned swimming lessons in the Tower. I imagine there are various staff-fighting or other physical training done in the Circles as well. Hawke, however, is a country boy or a girl, probably not shy from hard work. I imagine their father or someone probably taught the Hawke children to defend themselves physically, Carver probably excelled in it.
And the Dalish have a lifestyle that no doubt demands even the Keepers to be capable in non-magical combat.

All this would require being physically fit.

You'd rather have scrawny mages?

Maybe not scrawny, but leaner, like the elves in DA:O - still quite muscular, but not as wide. (I actually like the stupidly buff mages but not everyone shares my interest in beefcaaaaaake.)

With all of the bugs that were left if Origins, I'm sure Bioware are busy as we speak of working on a patch so every class has a selection of body types.

OMG!!!  Liek, if this isn't fixed, DA2 will be tha worstest game evah!!!  Mages must be all bones and use their staves for support due to lack of exercise!!!  Mages with muscles is a sign of the apocalypse!!!

It's just occurred to me also that Circle mages are effectively in prison. They let 'em out occasionally when needed (ie Ostagar), but basically they're locked in a tower and they can study, practice or do 1000 sit-ups out of sheer boredom.

Hawke and fam. work on a farm

Mages' animations are quite taxing

Not much to eat in medievalesque times so although they aren't strong, their low body fat shows their cut.

Take a pick :D

I don't know if I was a mage I'd train specifically because that would be my weakness otherwise, as the mage weapon trainer in the codex pointed out mages are terrible in fights but there's no reason they couldn't pick up a certain amount of profficiency (aside from gaming contrivances, like balance)

To make them visually appealing? I don't know, it's a video game. Not everybody loves super busty women either, but most video games cater to that clientele anyway.

But daaaayyyum, Anders!

From a more practical, game developery point of view, mages could be buffing up because:

1) buff people are more likely to be deemed attractive these days than flabby, doughy sorts, and they've got to make the game (and by extension, its characters) appealing, and

2) the all important class Balance. Now that Warriors and Rogues are getting magical abilities (in effect, though the lore might say otherwise), why wouldn't mages become more physically adept?

Also, I'm sure those huge staves are a bit heavy. Mages can't be too weak if they are to carry and twirl them, and they also do quite a bit of travel on foot in Theadas since horses don't exist.  They also could have just cast a spell to make them buff, as to attract the opposite sex easier.

In Witch Hunt, there is some party banter on weekly training exercises outside the tower that... well a certain mage escaped by swimming through Lake Calenhad and they had to chase after and return him, once. After that, no more going outside once per week. ;)

That certain mage should be hunted down and slain, then revived and slain again.  Oh wait...that certain mage is...

Because hot rod samurai spartan awesome general buttons.

Or because it makes it easier for the team when the same basic rig and volume is shared across all types of same-sex player characters.

Your choice.

different body models cost money, different clothes cost money, bigger areas cost money....they want to gain as much money as they can without spending a lot.....if this game will sell well they will know that the new strategy is a winning one and we will have even less features from bioware in the future....

unlike tower mages apostates are always on the move and usaly end up having to do manual labor so it would figure some of them would have muscles

Intellectual pursuits and less physical work don't preclude someone from keeping physically fit. Military personnel who work in intelligence, support and technical trades etc are still required to maintain a high standard of fitness.

Also Dolph Lundgren (one of the typical hollywood action hero tree trunks) has a master's degree in chemical engineering.

No other reason, they did do the extra effort to give two body models for the Hawkes at least, or maybe it's all mages, they have more slender bodies, that doesn't mean they won't have muscle, people used to be naturally fit in this world too before cars, machines, texting...
