Who says they have to look scrawny anyway?

Game design resources. Heck they took out choosing your race, now you're stuck with one body type per gender.

Oh how I'd love a body build slider, people who know me know I like playing games as slender guys, but alas, no variety in body for the Hawkes and Shepards out there.

They must look scrawny just because.  They also must be old with gray hair, pointy hats, long beards...

Running up and down the many, many, many stairs in the tower and using books as lift-weights would keep you fit :)

This, and apostates would have no time for study, they would practice, and work for a living.

Sure some may be complete book worms, but that's not exactly adventatious. Fear of templars is universal in mags, and they can nullify some magic, or stop you from casting. So having some muscle to back up your magic if things go wrong isn't a bad thing.

Henry Rollins has more books than you and a neck that can break your neck, therefore the premise of this thread is false.

We see a lot of examples why it could be considered a stereotype to assume that Mages shouldn't be muscular, but it's not that easy. We are living in society in which physical fitness is considered a value of its own and in which the vast majority of people has time to spend for their leisure, so regardless of his or her dayjob someone who works at the desk may successfully pursue building a muscular physique. In "pre-leisure-societies" though, physical fitness had no value of its own, but was a means to an end. Someone who didn't need to be fit, wasn't. With high probability, he wouldn't even have the free time and energy to "work out". Next thing is nutrition. To achieve a muscular physique you need a diet with a high amount of protein, that is not nearly as readily available in a medieval society than it is today.
I'm not saying, there couldn't be a muscular mage, but there are some more things to consider than "why not?".

some people are just born highly muscled. Sure, not all of them.. Given my genetics, I can do very little and still look like I hit the gym. Some people are just like that. (Although, I am not a mage lol) It is a *lot* about what you do or don't do, but some of it just can't be changed. Plus, they live in a tower. Walking stairs is excellent exercise - they probably have killer legs and glutes :)  It may actually take a lot of muscular contractions similar to Pilates to cast magic, who knows.

That and the fact that, you know, it's a game :)

Just imagine how fit the Templars must be! Not only do they train a lot - they walk up and down a lot of stairs, while wearing massive armor, every day. I pity the poor bastard that gets kicked by a templar...

Obviously they got tired of being picked on in school given the teacher won't let them set people on fire in class.

Because they run around a lot and fight a lot of things. And staves are heavy, especially when you twirl one around all the time. Maybe not as heavy as a sword, but they're not hollow. That's solid wood and/or metal in the case of some staffs. And now some have blades attached to them.

So, just because somebody reads books and studies they have the physique of a 12 year old? OP: you fail at common sense

I don't doubt that Circle mages can excerise (I don't assume that they must all be "weak") but the idea that a mage spends the whole day reading and can't be muscular would apply even less to apostates, IMO.

Press-ups?

I'm hoping that's a sign for us that we CAN become fighter/mages.

Either that, or they were lazy with the body builds for Male Hawke, so he retains muscles for each class.

I'm betting on the latter.

The key is to do one handed pressups. That way you can still hold the tome in the other hand. That's how it's done.

I hate it when games change the way my character looks based on their skills or abilities. This is sort of in the opposite direction, but in Fable 2 I never increased my strength stat (or whatever it was called in that game) because I didn't want to be a fat-ass.

Same with rogues. Suppose to be agile and nimble but look like The Rock. Many games have this problem, good thing most allow u to roll a female toon.

Never cared for muscular mages, personally, if you are fit enough to use real weapons then you should be dual classing, in my opinion.
