Mage Hawke isn't THAT muscular. hes strong looking but still fairly lean. and weve never seen warrior or rouge Hawke topless so don't assume that they're just as muscular. (they're probably jacked)

They all have same body model,
And i agree when in armor he looks fairly normal, but if someone wants to put up pic of Mhawke topless it's just Crazy big.

Never cared for muscular mages, personally, if you are fit enough to use real weapons then you should be dual classing, in my opinion.

Why the hell would you wanna use "real weapons" when you can burn someones face off with your mind? If I could do that I wouldnt give a crap about swords. If magic was real, and everyone could use it. In the middle ages they wouldnt have even bothered making swords and armor.

I mean whats the point? You charge at someone with a sword, and meanwhile they drop a iceberg on your head.
Thats like saying all soldiers should stop fightning with guns, and start fighting with clubs.

That's the point, generally.

If you have the power to kill people without exerting physical effort, then why are you physically fit?  Which is why I don't like the strong mage archetype.

They never write these mages to just be people who want to look good naked or anything, they just look like that with little to no explanation.

Though in this case, the explanation is just sharing tech, which I don't neccessarily get because separate models for one person who is changing armor sets doesn't seem too hard to implement, and it was something Bioware talked about while the game was still in development.

They can be muscular,

But not ripped to the extent they are.

Mages can be muscular, even ripped. The problem is that one body type is made for everyone.
I understand that some people want to have their mage muscular but I don't, and there are others that don't.
I for one would like a body type like Fenris.

Judging by the mods btw it seem like a different body type is not so hard to do. So why not make a couple?

Because people from Bioware have their ideals, they have ideas that they want to promote. They won't do it openly, but every artist always shows others his ideas with his work. Bevause the game is probably interesting, I won't bother over such thing as a body ( mods probably will fix ). But it is Biowares right to do what ever in their games even If I or others don't agree.

Maybe we should start arguing about why they aren't all malnourished short people instead. Because, we all know life in that setting produces athletically tall underwear models instead.

I wonder if you have any idea how "big" a medievial knight really was.

In the end, it's a pointless discussion. If you care so much, feel free to edit the models using the toolset, assuming we get a toolset this time.

Were discussing mages,

And the average medievil knight did not have a six pack. Wearing Armor all day does not grant you a sculpted body from the gods.

There's a reason "big" is in quotes.

''Oh, but he's a mage! He is physically incapable of doing labor enough to justify that body!"

The above statement is untrue.

''Oh, but he's a mage! He isn't forced to do enough labor to justify that body!"

Neither are warriors and rogues.

Weak mages are as much as a stereotype as body-builder warriors.

But you give no indication to what you're actually saying,
Are you saying Knights were small?
That they were fat?

Physical labor like plowing field will never grant you a six pack, You need to specific workout routines and diets for that kind of body, THis include lifting weights, A good diet, and Plenty of Situps/pushups/and crunches once you have belt a muscular base.

My point was you're using realism as an argument when it holds no water, since realistically we'd all be malnourished, short people.

We're not. We're underwear models catering to 21st century western aesthetics. Get over it. :)

it's the most reasonable reason,

But i still find that a cop out. "why does everyone have a six pack?" i ask

"Magic" they say.

They weren't that much shorter, only around 5'8 for men which is roughly 4 inches shorter than average male height these days.

And no i will not get over it, What a horrible thing to say on a forum.

Uh, average male height nowadays is just shy of 5'10, so. . .yeah.

The two factors that determine how muscular someone is:

1) How much intense physical work they do, and
2) Genetics

Neither has anything to do with magic and reading (or not reading) books. This thread is awful and you should feel bad for posting it.

Nice straw man, there. He said somebody who spends most of their time studying books and magic shouldn't be as muscular as someone who spends most their time engaged in physical training (which they shouldn't), not whatever it is you're trying to argue against.

Anyway, to answer the OP: mages are muscular because adding more character models to the game entails extra work. It's the same reason every male and every female in Origins had the same two body types.

I wish they'd add body sliders to the character customization system myself, but I doubt they ever will.

I remeber in the SA trailer Leliana seemed to be a bit more muscular than Morrigan. Morrigan just looked anorexic in SA.

But even recent modification in AdnD allow mages to wear chain mail armor. This idea that mages have to be physically unfit is rather silly. It's a hold over from old-school fantasy, that really has no basis when you think about it.

Given time, and motivation it's perfectly logical to have a mage with a six pack and chain mail armor.
