I wonder how many first-timers repeatedly bash their head against a wall determined to beat the nigh-on invincible Ser Cauthrien at Howe's estate and miss the whole Escape plot. Fortunately I didn't - but I was surprised, and don't doubt it's something a lot of first-timers miss.

This.

And silly-assed me.  I actually crushed her pretty easily on the current run-through...before remembering the whole captured bit needed to be triggered there.

Whoops.

2nd time round I let myself get captured so I could experience the rescue mission again. 1st time I tried it as both the rescuers and as my PC and Alistair, was fun on both counts but I liked playing the companions so I stuck with their attempt.

1st time around I was captured but on escaping discovered some of my gear had disappeared so I reloaded and more by luck than anything else defeated her 2nd time.

First few playthroughs I missed the Chasind Cache. I found the stuff in the chest by the statues, assumed that was the Chasind Cache and thought, "Ha, I don't need their silly trail signs".

I missed so many things on the first playthrough it'd be easier to list the things I did do. I didn't recruit Sten or Wynne and didn't pick up the family sword for a human noble playthrough. I didn't do any side quests I think except for Lothering's. I can't tell you how many NPC's I missed talking to.

As far as random things go, I missed the guards playing cards in the human noble origin. I've also noticed that there are random assortments of what looks like food (pies and apples, maybe?) in the main hall of Castle Cousland. But there's random food everywhere.

When in the Dead Trenches, in the room where Helm of the Legion lies, if you equip the entire Legion of the Dead set and click on that clicky thing in the middle, Gangue Shade will appear.

A LOT of Sten's conversations are easy to miss, because unlike the rest of the characters that you recruit, you have to unlock pieces of Sten's dialogue by taking him to certain places in the game and having him randomly comment about it, whereas the majority of dialogue for the rest of your party is unlocked simply talking to them at camp or by approval rating.

For example, if you take Sten to the Circle Tower and have Wynne in your party, Wynne will tell Sten to stop flinching, to which Sten will answer that "...an unbound mage is like a wildfire." Afterwards, you can talk to Sten and ask him about what he's discussed, and he'll give you a lot of insight into how the Qunari view mages.

Another example is if you take Sten to Redcliffe. Right after speaking with Bann Teagan and leaving the Chantry for the first time, Sten will comment about human wisdom. Afterwards, you can talk to him and ask him about it, and he will again give you insight into how he and the Qunari view the Chantry and wisdom. This dialogue is really hard to miss because I think that he will only make this comment the first time you're in Redcliffe, and on top of that, another party member might comment instead.

If you have Zevran and Sten in your party, Zevran will get Sten to mention something about a group of Qunari who do not follow the way of the Qun, which then opens up another series of conversations with Sten.

The last one I can remember is Sten randomly commenting about kids in Denerim, which unlocks another set of conversations regarding Qunari children.

The first time I played this game I thought that Sten was boring because he hardly talked (I didn't bring him around that much because my first character's coercion was low and he disapproved of a lot of my actions), but the second time I played this game, I brought him wherever I went and found out that he's probably one of the most talkative members of your party, giving you tremendous insight into the Qunari (which is probably good preparation for Dragon Age 2).

If you don't have at least 15 constitution Isabela will not be pleased with your performance. Apparently there was no grey warden endurance to be seen in her cabin.

I don't think the party interaction dialogues for Sten are place specific just character specific as I've gotten then in other places to the ones you mentioned. His approval does have to be high enough to unlock the story about his sword, but can be done in camp or anywhere.

first time I played a human noble I missed the Cousland treasury. I noticed the locked door and since I was a warrior and not a rogue just ignored it. wasn't until a later playthrough that I found just trying to open it as any class will prompt your mother to give you the key

Yes the party banter with Zevran to unlock the "Tal'Vashiroth" conversations and the party banter with Wynne to unlock the "mage" conversations does not seem to be place specific, but in my experience, at least, Sten will only comment about human wisdom while leaving the Redcliffe chantry for the first time, and he will only comment about children while passing by the children running around in Denerim for the first time).

After he does comment about those things while exploring, you can later ask him about those topics at any time (i.e., at camp).

I think it's pretty amazing that I'm still finding new things even after playing through the game several times... the other day I discovered that if you click on 'mouse' after he becomes a bear he changes back and talks to you giving you a whole new set of conversation.. I actually clicked on him accidentally while walking around which brought up the new conversation I'd missed before..

I also missed leliana and sten the first playthrough, I just didn't know they were potential party members and immediately started a new warden when I found out... lol

It's pretty easy to miss those two on the first playthrough.. I didn't even know sten was in the cage the first time, never saw him at all... lol and then when I did see him the second time I chose the wrong conversation options when speaking with the revered mother and tried to intimidate her into giving me the key, which is not a wise way to go about getting sten... lol

I also told leliana to back off because I wanted to kill the henchmen who attacked us...

I never knew that interesting. But no way will I replay any time soon.
Hardest thing for me was and I always missed the right lines for doing the foursome: female warden, Leliana, Zevran, Isabella.

Oh, there was a lot I missed in my first few playthroughs....

-- The prisoner in Ostagar, and even then, it took me another couple playthroughs to discover he had a key I could get.
-- Totally missed Owen's daughter in Redcliffe... was exploring after the castle was secure and found her bones.
-- Didn't recruit Leilana the first time and so didn't get Sten either as I didn't learn it was possible to pick the lock on his cage until months later.
-- Completely missed Shale's quest in my first run... saw the shiny gold DLC spot on my map but kept putting it off, thinking I'd go do that quest after everything else was done (too used to Elder Scrolls and thinking you could keep going after the main quest line was done).
-- Missed all the Blackstone Irregulars and Mage Collective quests because I kept waiting to get a quest that would send me to talk to them.
-- But the biggest thing was not knowing about the "Tab" key highlighting all the clickables in a room... missed so many things because of that (like the Summoning Sciences quest, etc).

every time I do an evil character I tell myself "ok this time I'm gonna promise to rescue his daughter and just not open the door" every time I forget and either kill Owen, avoid him completely (ie: abandon Redcliffe) or rescue her out of force of habit (and the first time just to see how she'd react to running home to the safety of... her fathers corpse. hey when I play evil I don't pull punches) so now this qualifies as my "little thing I missed" since I never did find out what happens if you dont rescue her until now

What prisoner in Ostagar?  I am stunned!

I have done Cousland storyline twice and missed the treasury both times, but by the time I read about it here I couldn't be bothered to redo -  my current character is a Cousland  and doing well so  never mind that!

I didn't know about the Green Blade or whatever Kailtin's sword is called until I read about it on the fprums but I bought it off her in this playthrough.

I forgot about her once after promising to find her. The outcome made me feel terribly guilty...although I did get access to one of the best bows in the game out of it.  Made it very tempting to conveniently "forget" about her in later playthroughs.  xD

How can you abandon Redfcliffe? I thought you HAD to deal with the demon and save the Arl to complete that section?

The hungry prisoner in a cage. You can give water and food to him and get the key for the tranquil's locker.

You have to save the arl yes, but you don't have to defend the village.

When you first arrive and speak to Bann Tegan you can refuse to help him or you can just leave the area before the Battle at Nightfall. You will have to go back eventually to deal with the Redcliffe Castle portion, but the village itself will have been wiped out by the undead, save for Tegan.

Cool, I may try that with a future evil character. I always thought you had no choice but to help them.

Wow, I never even came across him despite playing return to Ostagar 3 times and 4 times the original Ostagar sstuff.  I might see if I can go back to Ostagar tomorrow, since I have already done the main stuff there.   Is it return to Ostagar or before the main battle?
