This topic contains spoilers for issue 2 of the Evolution miniseries. Continue at your own risk.

First of all, let me say that the story taken on it's own merits is...ok. It tries to tell the origin of TIM by exploring people and places mass effect fans are already familiar with, which is understandable. If this story existed in a vacuum it might even be a fine little addition to the franchise. The problem is it contradicts so much that came before it and strains cedibility so much that my mind is literally boggled.

To sum up some of the new information this comic gives us:

1) Ash's grandfather didn't surrender Shanxi, nor did he leave the Alliance over that surrender. He left the Alliance because he hates aliens, including the Citadel.

2) Saren's brother wasn't some nameless soldier that died on Shanxi, thus cementing Saren's hatred of humanity. Saren's brother was the general in charge of the invasion, and he left Shanxi still alive and well.

3) At least part of the reason for Saren's brother being on Shanxi, and possibly the First Contact War itself, was to steal Reaper artifacts (yes, a high ranking turian general had at least limited knowledge of the Reapers 30 years before ME1).

So that's all surprising, given that it flatly contradicts so much of what we know from the games and books. But even the stuff that is at least theoretically consistent is...odd. TIM's being written as having a parallel story to Shepard. He's hit with a blast from an alien artifact, gets wierd visions and odd language abilities as a result, and then is given an advanced human warship to track down what it all means. He's even chasing a turian - Saren's brother, Desolas. Really? That's TIM's origin? He's renegade Shepard from 30 years ago?

The incongruities don't stop there. Within weeks of the end of the First Contact War TIM is on Illium. He even has a conversation with someone mentioning how close they are to the Terminus Systems. No explanation of how he knew where Illium was, or how he knew what the Terminus Systems are. No explanation about language barriers or technical problems like not having an omni tool; he even at one point pilots a flying car on Illium. WTH? They literally made first contact less than a year before. For most of that time he's been a guerrila fighter on Shanxi. There's no way he could know any of this unless it was part of his "Reaper download".

This comic is bizarre in it's constant disregard for continuity. The only thing it might help with is to explain some of the ME2 plot problems by saying that TIM already knew ahead of time what resources the Collectors had and who to send after them because the Reapers downloaded that information into his brain.

I would argue that the General Williams thing isn't completely inaccurate. When TIM asked General Williams if they could take the troop transport he said "we're leaving it anyway". It was clear that they were getting the hell of Shanxi and that's why TIM only had 20 hours to find the artifact.

I don't see how Desolas being a general changes anything.

It isn't stated that they know it's a "reaper" artifact. Who knows their depth of knowledge on the subject. Saren doesn't seem well informed about it at all. The most likely outcome here is that TIM will stop Desolas (thereby making #2 accurate) and Saren will pick up where his brother left off. After all, we don't know how long Saren was preparing before Eden Prime.

Yes, he's being serious. TIM blasted by an Artifact, given a Ship and is on a quest to find out what that artifact did to him. He even has an enemy in the form of Desolas. TIM is Shepard but just 30 years ago. Very true. The comic had be confused a lot. I actually thought #1 was okay but #2? Mind = Blown... in a bad way.

Sigh.

I feel like most of you are raging because you choose to. I'm confident I provided a pretty good explanation for this stuff.

greaaaaaat we'll be debating this for 30 years.....I hate it when comics can't match the wide audience lore. They did this with an anime called Evangelion in the anime everything was set certain things happen certain characters die in the manga and ova's set things begain to be reversed and we're still trying to figure out was the anime, the ova, or the managa right as far as the story plot. You'd think sense the anime came first that it would be right but everyone who says the other two are right make for wonderful headaches.

So now lore-consistency is dumb?

I just picked up the first issue of the comic, too... now I kind of regret it. I don't normally read comics, but man that took me 5 minutes to read: regardless of the story I'm not sure that's worth 3 bucks.

Hm... this doesn't leave me with much hope for Mass Effect 3. Oh well, at least we'll always have the first game.

Revelation clearly states that Saren was preparing to utilize the "alien" ship at that time, when he became aware of how advanced its technology was. This is I believe 10 years prior to Eden Prime.

This has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever read, Mac Walters is such a talentless hack and these pointless comics do nothing but drop kick the story of Mass Effect into a nonsensical paste. They shouldn't be made in the first place and they certainly shouldn't have this idiot writing them.

Can Walters write anything Mass Effect related without relying on retcons and his fundamental contempt for Mass Effect and all it's fans?

Exposition is something Walters seriously and desperately lacks. I can't tell if that's really the case or it's simply the inability to include details in a comic, since comics are typically not that detailed. In any case, I was never happy with the idea of "comics" involving the Mass Effect universe.

I think you guys are going a bit over the bridge. Maybe the whole comic is just a set-up for next DCL, where we'll prolly gonna hit the Illusive Man himself. (suicide after-mission)

Mac Walters is a hack.

I've been saying this for a while now and people are still trying to deny it. And now he's going back and mauling everything Drew K. established.
