Baldur's Gate II is my favorite game but it's not the gameplay or great writing that makes me want to replay it over and over again. It's all the excellent mods that are available and since the game is 11 years old there are a lot of great once out there. Without the mods the game would get boring and repetitive after a while. /This is my personal opinion.

The mods do a lot for me too. A lot more than mods ever did for DA:O for me, for some reason. I still play BG2, because I can experience something new every playthrough. The modding community for that game is absolutely fantastic, and I doubt that it would still be so active if it weren't for the fact that BG2 was an amazing game to start with.

When will you guys get off the BG tip, if they released BG2 last month the way it was, you guys would not praise it

Just give it a rest, will you. The claim was silly the first time you made it, and repetition isn't making it any more clever or convincing.

I've played the german demo and I can confirm combat is a hell of a lot more fun and reactive.

Exactly. Even though the story is the same there's still something new every time you play. So in that regard I don't think DA2 will be as good as BGII. But BGII has had 11 years to build up the modding community and I don't think DAII will come close. The story and game itself however.. I guess we'll see in a few weeks.

I re-play vanilla BG series. Mods just ain't my cup of tea.

The reason DA games won't ever reach the heights of the BG saga? There are entirely optional quests in BG2, multiple ones, that are the size of a DAO treaty quest. That's so much more beautifully-written content that they just won't be able to put in DA games (if only for the fact that doing it all in a 3D engine instead of the Infinity engine would require massively more coding resources).

Indeed, there are great BG2 mods around, I particularly enjoy some of the good npc mods out there, the BG modding community have written some really great characters

Me usually too. I have bad experience with Cromwell accusing me of being a vampire 0_o

Only community patches, sometimes tutu + graphical changes.
And De'Arnise romance mod. Yup, I guess I like noble girls with bad makup.

Well, its a fact that DA2 surpasses BG2 in terms of aesthetics due to technology (no duh), and the combat system could be seen as better (opinions vary on this one). In my opinion, the D&D system is just way too clunky and slow. Mike did say DA2's writing was his most favourite. He said it in one of his interviews. Who knows honestly? Opinions will always vary.

Superior technology doesn't necessarily translate to superior aesthetics, since the latter is an inherently subjective quality. If that were not the case, any piece of amateur art made with Photoshop would be inherently superior to every oil painting ever created, just for example.

Yes, it does. Dragon Age: Origins is better. I played BG2 for the first time in 2010 and I loved it but I still think that DA:O is better. A friend of mine(32 years old) who has replayed BG2 every year since its release likes DA:O better than BG2. It's his all-time favourite game and BG2 is second :)

Much more deep and with an awesome story and characters, this will be the game to take the throne from BGII. just look at how amazingly relevant and deep the skill tree looks, compared to the redundant and overfilled mess that was BGII abilities.

Pathetic ^^

That's exactly it in my opinion as well.
There is this whole wide world around you with so much going on that has nothing or very little to do with your main quest in the BG games. It makes for a colourful and rich atmosphere. I find that far more fascinating and immersive than fully voiced dialogue and shiny graphics.

BG2 was far better for the time period it came out then DA:O is for our time, even if you find DA:O to be a better game when compared equally by todays standards, its hard to deny how innovative and ground breaking the BG series was in its time.

I think what makes BG2 so great even for many people today are the things it got right, and there was a lot of it, its scope, story and writing hold up equally well or better then any games being made today. Where there problems with the writing, sure, I still grit my teeth a little anytime the dialogue in BG2 seems to assume my character is a male human warrior with low intelligence and bad hygiene, but over all its a lot better then what we get today.

I would also like to mention that, despite using the god awful AD&D 2nd edition system, BG2 still made the combat enjoyable and challenging, there was a lot of strategy and tactics involved in a many of the encounters. I find it far more refreshing then DA:O use the same tactics on every fight, no matter what it is, style of play. Unless of course your on easy, then you can leave the room and let your companions kill everything for you.

Game really can't afford to start slow and difficult nowadays.
Mainly because audience is older.

I don't understand this. You have less free time... therefore, when you find something you enjoy, you have to be able to burn through it at top speed in the minimum time possible? Surely that time will only go on to be spent doing much of the same, with the next piece of quick, disposable, instant-gratification entertainment. Is savouring something slowly over the course of several weeks or even months really that unbearable a prospect?

As for BG2 "only being good at the time" or "being terrible by today's standards"; something has aged badly, it was never good in the first place. Quality is timeless, even if age can create a few hurdles a modern audience will have to adjust to. I started gaming in the BG2 era, pretty recently by anyone's standards, but I'm currently playing my way through the Might and Magic series and they're still as enjoyable and relevant today as they ever were. I guess I must just be nostalgic for... er... these games I've never played before.

Yup.
If you can spam 4 x 99 healing potions, something isn't right.
Tactics? At least 2 mages -> Cone of cold + mind blast. Congratulation, you have beaten the game.

I hope they will fix this in DA2.

BG2 is better because it has the better (D&D) Scenario and battles Rules and the party management works better for me as it is very tactical :D

BG was more imersive in many way than DA:O. It had it's flaws, but overall? Better than DA:O

I have 12+ playtroughs of BG2.

I have 1 of DA:O, and I can't even force myself to play it again without heavy use of mods.

More deep than BG2? No chance, DAO wasn't as deep and this one is half as long and contains less content than DAO, so...
