And these are the reasons BG2 was, as you noted, much longer than DAO.

Sometimes shorter= better. BGII felt too spread out. I wanted it to be over already about three quarters in.Pedrak wrote...

RPGs are not supposed to be short. If you felt it was too long it might just have been too boring.ManiacalEvil wrote...

If DA:O had been 300 hours long it would have been better than BG2. BG2 was a good RPG but what made it epic was for once the fact that the protagonist was child of a god and the game describes the very long way to succeed him. There was nothing 'deeper' in BG2, just longer. The characters were actually not even as deep as in DA:O. You didn't even have something like 'hardening' companions. You also had only one companion quest. Only thing maybe is that you had alignment. Like Karma in FO:NV. If you get into the negative Karma region Cass tells you that you are a jerk and leaves. And about same happened in BG2 if you went too far in the opposite alignment of some companions. People are just being nostalgic. BG2 had 2D graphics, which were beautiful, but you hardly had cutscenes either. And you had no VO. You had to read every single word. And it had enough things to complain about, just as DA:O or any other game. BG2 'cultists' have a subjective view when it comes to their object of worship.A Turkey Frog wrote...
To be honest I've never played any of the Baldurs Gate games, but from what I've heard they are amazing, so I can't really compare them to DA2. I'm sure DA2 will be a fantastic game, and maybe better that ME2. With that said my favorite rpg of all time is Final Fantasy IV.
This is quite strange. You're listing all these things about DA:O that were better than BG2, but then say BG2 was better just because it was much longer? Quantity does not equal quality, particularly if a lot of the material is filler. Part of the skill in designing any game/movie/book is knowing when to stop.
Edit: Just saw a couple of your other posts - I agree that a big part of the reason people rave about BG2 was because of its length. But like someone else said, I was ready for BG2 to end long before it did.

I'll be seriously surprised if it's even close to being as good as Origins, let alone BG2
After looking at the gameplay vids, I agree 100%

But DAO, while shorter, had a lot more stuff that felt like filler to me than BG2.
Both games had a lot of combat, and BG2's was simply a lot better - more varied, more tactical and deep. Different enemies, a wider array of weapons, spells, etc.
If DA2 is shorter than DAO because they cut repetitive stuff like the Deep Roads - waves and waves of mobs of similar enemies - then I agree shorter is better ... in this case.

I am sorry but you maybe should not even try to play them. They are real RPGs, and you wont have any radar and hud showing where you need to go next. You just might become lost, frustrated, and angry.
This was friendly advice.

Much more deep and with an awesome story and characters, this will be the game to take the throne from BGII. just look at how amazingly relevant and deep the skill tree looks, compared to the redundant and overfilled mess that was BGII abilities.
Much more awesome story?...and characters? I'm sorry but Boo demands proof. If no poof is given, Minsc smash!
Ugh, I hated Minsc................. It does look like I'll be enjoying the DA2 characters much more.

RPGer 1: They have dumbed down RPG's a lot these days, remember when there were no mini maps, markers and you had to click on every npc to gather info, they were true RPGs.
RPGer2: Plus we had to calculate fortitude, DPS and other values our selves. The games have been dumbed down so much.
Same thing happens when older women talk.
OldWomen 1: Remember how we use to make spaghetti ourselves by plucking wheat from the fields, dry the grain and crush it to make semolina. Those were the golden days.
OldWomen 2: Yes they have dumbed down the whole process, we can buy them preprocessed in supermarts. And Now that idiot farmer john looses his hounds on me if he catches me stealing wheat from his field.

DA2 isn't out yet, so it's not fair to compare it to other games. In principal, BG and DA2 cannot be compared evenly, since imo BG gives you the choice to roll your own character, thus giving wider role-playing opportunities, while DA2 will put us in the shoes of Hawke, and judging from my experience with ME2, personally I can't get that much into such roles, it's more like playing it along to see what's happening, a spectator so to speak to the play that is unfolding, which can be an interesting play nonetheless. I think it's better to compare it with Planescape: Torment. Good luck there.
And you can't compare any of the "humorists" DAO companion (Alistair, Leliana, Dog, Morrigan, Oghren, Shale, Zevran, Anders) with Minsc and Boo, they all a bunch of smart-ass sayers, while Minc's is a genuine character. You can compare them with Edwin, but yeah, they loose even against him imo.

That is your opinion.
My opinion: It's not a crappy game and it's hard to compare it to todays games, both have their strengths.

y
Kids needs radars showing "lol walk in that way".
In BG you could also kill almost everything, and AoE could hit friendly NPCs making them angry (usually commoners just fled) and guards attacked you.
These current DA and stuff, lol, they ain't real RPGs. Interactive adventure soap operas is better term. Games for stupids.
