No they're not. <_<

I'd cite the demo vids floating around but you'll say it's just because its an "old build" soI'll cite a dev instead.

"Dan Lazin said, "The number of enemies in [Knights of the Old Republic]
is much lower than what we've got in [Dragon Age II].  Here you get very
large parties of enemies who go down fairly easily individually.  So
consequently queuing up orders, a whole lot at once, istn't particularly
useful because that individual guy is going to be dead pretty soon and
you're going to need to reassess in two seconds and pick a different
target."

Dying in 3 seconds may as well be a 1 hit puttie.

Personally I can't play BG2 anymore due to the fact that I now have a 23 inch wide screen monitor and the screen stretches BG2 and makes everything look too wide :(

I was partly kidding and partly serious about what I said.

As I said, I still love BG2 more than almost any modern game, and I can easily still play it and thoroughly enjoy it.  But I do think that games have, in general, come a long way since then, in terms of polish, stability, balance, storytelling, writing, acting, presentation, and depth and sophistication of gameplay.

Not to say that there weren't games that had all of those elements ten or twenty years ago, but I think that the bar has certainly been raised, and little things that we used to tolerate without a second thought could potentially be considered a deal-breaker in a modern game.

Hey, guys?  Just a heads-up-- Baldur's Gate isn't nearly as awesome as any of us remember it to be.

Sorry, but it's true.  Don't get me wrong, BG2 is still probably my favorite BioWare game, and definitely one of my favorite games of all time, but that's got to be at least 63% nostalgia and 34% lower, circa-2000 standards (as compared with my current gamer standards, which are much less forgiving of poor balance and other design flaws).

No! Nostalgia means that your remember the game being good, but if you try it now, you realize that is not as good as you thought. But BG2 holds up very well even today. Fans of real cRPGs will play it anytime, and say that it is a fantastic game.

As for DA2 being better...:D Not in a million years. It won't even be as good RPG as DAO.

Get the widescreen mod.

While you are it, check out the other mods too.

There are mods for that. I've got a 21-inch widescreen monitor that runs at 1680*1050, but I run Baldur's Gate at 1440*900. It looks great.

On a completely different note, if you want to play REALLY good rpgs, go get a SNES (or an emulator)

Much as I love old SNES rpgs, they share little with cRPGs and more with jRPGs

Still, Lufia II, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger? Tough to argue there.

Hmmm.

I'd like to think that the OP knew exactly what would happen when he/she made this thread. I can't imagine why such a thing would be done, except to provoke an expected response. That, or the OP decided to try BG 2 a few weeks ago and thought it was terrible.

One or the other, I think.

Subjective (ostensibly). I'm playing BGII right now (not this moment, but you know what I mean), and it's every bit as wonderful as I remember. Gameplay was NEVER Baldur's Gates draw, because, let's face it, 2e AD&D is rubbish. RUBBISH.

[EDIT] RUBBISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amen...

I love BG 2 and I still play it today. The modding community makes it all so easy to get into it. That said I believe that dragon age 2 will be completely different. I'll enjoy it but honestly I love BG 2 so much nothing will top it. I'll enjoy everything and like it!

BG2 is the best RPG in computer gaming history. I think it will forever remain Bioware's masterpiece.

I'm downloading BG2 complete and NWN Diamond just to see what they're like. I want something different so I thought I'd try them. I read that there were 3 excellent mods for NWNs. I'll download them too. It doesn't hurt to try them out when gog.com has them for 9.99 each. I'm going to buy NWN2 from steam.

Here is a protip for NWN. If you think the OC sucks, its because it does. Play the expansions.

Course, if you can make it past Act 1 of the OC you are pretty safe, as only the first act is slow as molasses.

BG 2 occupies a special position in my atrophied old gamer's heart that DA:O will probably never be able to displace, but I have no doubt whatsoever that things would be different had DA:O been my first BioWare game, or first computer RPG.

Personally, I think that DA:O's gameplay mechanics and rules are much better than BG's, and, if I'm being honest with myself and trying to set aside all nostalgic influence (though that's not really possible), DA's story, characters, and dialogue are at least as good as BG's, and quite possibly better.  That doesn't mean that I don't think BG holds up well, though... I think it holds up very well.

My first Bioware game was Mass Effect, but I've only played that game 4 times. I've played DAO 16 times. I guess I'll see about BG2 when it finishes downloading.

I'm not as critical about games as most on these forums.  If it has a good story, then I can appreciate it.  Like I said, I really enjoyed ME1 way more than ME2.  I'll see about NWN.

Going back to BG after being weaned on Mass Effect and Dragon Age (at least where BioWare games are concerned) may be kind of tough, but as long as you can get past the annoying issues that go along with the game's attempt to implement D&D rules in a computer RPG framework, it's still fantastic, I think.

Me, I've recently installed Planescape and I'm about to give it a whirl for the first time ever, so we'll see how that goes.

Planescape easily takes my personal cake in terms of best story. My protip for that game would be to max out Wisdom followed by Int.

Also, that reminds me, guy whos gonna play BG2. The lower your AC the better! If it says -10 then thats good, you want negatives!

All right, I'll keep that in mind.  Thanks for the tip.

I'll admit, I have GoldenEye to thank for teaching me this one.

That's a very very tall order.

To be honest, I have no idea why I loved that insanely ancient game so much, but I know I played the hell out of its ancient a**.

Yeah that sentence is really weird.

BG2 isn't "insanely ancient"Posted Image It's only 11 years old. It can't even vote yet.
Ultima 7 is 19 years old and it's still one of the best CRPGs ever made.

Yes, it is.

How is 11 years ancient? Unless I guess if you're 18-20 years old, in which case that's nearly half your current time spent on this world.. so yeah I guess it can seem ancient.

Get another decade or 2 under your belt, and 11 years doesn't seem that long at all.
