Depends entirely on your character. He's obviously not talking about every Warden killing Nathaniel, he's talking about a Cousland one. Tell me you haven't made a very bitter Cousland Warden? I know I have, and it was totally in-character for her to kill Nathaniel without a split second thinking. He had the name Howe, the Howes', to her, were as bad as the next one.. a la, a good reason to kill him.

My Couslands don't get that bitter. After the Blight, he's more weary than anything else - he's going to stand up and fight, but he's not going to kill if he's not in the heat of battle. Besides he got to personally kill Rendon Howe, and that was the satisfaction for the death of the Cousland family. And then there's the Joining. The act of Joining itself could kill him. Let the Maker judge - if Nathaniel is worthy of a second chance, he'll live. If he's not, at least I made the attempt to increase our numbers instead of hanging a potential recruit.

Hell, being a Warden is essentially a death sentence, and it gets you one more blade to kill darkspawn with.[snip] You are guaranteed to die gruesomely, and you're not likely to receive any thanks while alive. Recruiting him is the most likely choice, even for someone who still holds a grudge against the Howes. What better revenge to take then to force Rendon's own son into this life?

More than act of revenge, for a Ferelden Warden or even a Cousland one, it might more be a "see what I have been fighting for, see what I have been through, and decide for yourself who was the bad guy".  My Wardens more likely wanted to make him understand the situation, which pretty clearly he did not know. Nathaniel is kind of lost when he returns to Amaranthine, he needs for purpose, and being a Grey Warden helps him in a way.

And sometimes I wonder, what is the medium life expectation in Dragon Age? Taint or not, probably not many reach a really old age. Especially in the mercenary/knight/killing business, before the taint some wound or a debilitated body could kill you. Yes maybe you would go to the Deep Roads, and it is a pretty gruesome death, but I have the feeling that 30 years of Grey Warden life are not such a brief time in that age.

For my Cousland it was the need for capable wardens that prevented her from slashing his face, duty was her watchword. They did eventually become friends though once she stopped seeing him as Howe's son and started to see him as Nathaniel a person in his own right.

My DN on the other hand killed him. Once he admits he'll probably be back to kill her later it's off to the gallows with him. In dwarven politics you don't take things like that lightly.

It really depends on the Warden your RPGing imo.

Wait not killing Nathaniel because he's not Arl Howe isn't debateable n it's bias?  Seems to me thats perfectly DEBATEABLE.  Actually it's not debateable, there's nothing to debate on it, it's more like common sense actually.  Do you kill a child because their parent is a sadistic killer, do you condem that child for the rest of his life because of who that child's parent was?

Rational argument, hmm I thought the rational arguement was whether to let Nathaniel live or not.  And a lot of people base that decision on who his father is n what Arl Howe did. Killing Nathaniel because of Arl Howe is NOT rational, it's pure irrational.  It's just plain wrong n pure evil.

So what if this is a game, it's a game with emotion, with feeling, it's not a hack n slash, bang bang your dead kind of game.  This game was meant to have debates like this or the devs wouldn't have made the characters so deep.

I've never played through Awakening with City Elf.  It would be awkward if I did since that would make Nathaniel the first human noble I had an opportunity to kill and spared.  Still, he's lost his lands so he might no longer count as a noble. Then again my City Elf actually dies so there's a reason I've never done Awakening with her.

Recruit him. He's an interesting character. Play your cards right, and he comes to despise his father.

a) Wow, way to necro an ancient thread.

b ) I've played with a City Elf. It kind of frustrated me that there's no option to point out that Rendon Howe purged the alienage and/or sold your people into slavery, since that would be a very good retort for a City Elf who wants to tell Nathaniel where to stick it. I really hate how the game never lets you acknowledge the City Elf's grudge against Rendon Howe. Once again, I have to headcanon that when Nataniel says, "You killed my father!" my gal retorts, "Your father sold my father into slavery!"

But it was interesting for the reason you listed: Nathaniel was the first noble my gal encountered that she could kill but chose to spare (when he said "you're punishing his entire family for my father's actions," she thought of how Howe punished her entire alienage for her actions in killing Vaughan, so she let him go), and despite the two starting out not liking each other, by the end they became great friends. It was really heart-warming.

If there's any character whose possible death I wish Bioware would retcon, it would be Nate. I'd love to see him in future games.
