Dragon Age II is a real time game whether you use pause or not.

When is the last time you paused in real time? :?

I just paused a few seconds ago, trying to come up with a witty reply. Admittedly, this is the best I could do.

I smirked. Was it worth it?

Making the lovely Maria smirk? Totally worth it.

I added a few burst combos to the guide. I am interested in constructive feedback on the guide.

Maybe, just maybe, we should wait to play the game before we start making guides. This may be sound in theory, but there's on evidence it'll work at all.

It'll be interesting to see if this requires changing once you actually see the game.

Ofcourse it will. Talent priorities will definitely be switched around once we learn about specializations, talent tomes, and how useful certain talents really are in the actual game rather than just on paper.

I wondered how long it would take for something like this. Kudos!

How fast does mana regenerate? That would decide how much you burst vs. how much you kite, and how early you should get the Battlemaster talents. If you're kiting too much no matter how, then perhaps it's best to play more of a tank style warrior.

Also, what to do when your mana is half full? To burst (or rather, half-burst), or not to burst?

I thought the best way to dominate anything was to roll a mage?

Im guessing you mean how fast does stamina regenerate? That is a very good question, one that would definitely effect how you play the game. Even though I have bolster and second wind at level thirteen and fourteen on my list, it is likely that you will need them much sooner which is why I recommend getting them early incase you get an extra point from a quest or tome or something.

I will edit my guide to point out that your support warrior will cast rally whenever your stamina dips below a certain level. This in combination with bolster should help you recover from your first burst. Second wind will give you a full recovery after your second burst and allow a third burst. The fastest you can burst is every 20 seconds, which means 40 seconds to complete a dual burst cycle. Using this sort of rotation you could burst indefinitely since bolster cooldown is probably around that, as is upgraded second wind (60seconds, 45 sec upgraded) and rally (30 seconds).

I don't really think a guide is needed for Nightmare. All you need to do is use all your abilities as opposed to 1.

That's some very encouraging maths you did there. Perhaps the devs did envision this as one of the possible builds. After all, "Vanguard", "Claymore", and the animnation of "Scythe" are pretty obvious. Perhaps they are smiling right now as they read your guide: some one takes the hint!

There is also the question of how many points to put in Willpower vs. Strength. Personally I like more points in Willpower, which makes Second Wind more powerful. But if you only invest in the minimum Willpower points, then something like Deep Reserves may work just as well without as many talent points spent as Second Wind.

Which is why I suggest you take a look at this, if you haven't already:
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/6106591/1

It seems that putting too many points in a single attribute (e.g. Strength for Warriors, or Magic for Mages) may not be as effective as spreading them all around a bit more, by game design. This is exactly what I expect from DA2.

Second run will likely do a 2H warrior...well, what I was planning on was something like this:

each level: 2 strength/then EITHER 1 in dex OR cunning OR willpower....so...

level 2: 2 strength 1 willpower
level 3: 2 strength 1 dexterity
level 4: 2 strength 1 cunning
start again....

Doesn't that make the ultimate guide self-admittedly presumptuous? Maybe you should call it some theorycrafting.

Does Dex or Cun help Warrior that much? Maybe some points in Magic is needed as well as this build does not have access to things like Elemental Aegis.

I'm a Willpower person no matter what class I play, but I think it is more important for the Vanguard build.

Well, it is similar to what I did in DAO. I agree that willpower is the 2nd most important stat after strength for a 2H warrior, now dexterity increases the chance of a critical hit and cunning increases the amount of critical damage; now in the long run it could be so small a difference that a build where you do 2 stength/1 willpower each level might be better.

I am of the opinion that general build are just not that effective, no matter what the class. So always strive to specialise, here I am on the fence, so when in doubt I would say invest 1 willpower and 2 strength each level seems the safest route to go.

Thanks for the advice! I'm a newbie to DA.

There's an evolution of Whirlwind that gives 100% critical chance, this would make Dexterity redundant and Cunning very useful. Personally, Whirlwind is my favorite talent seen so far in DA2. So I'd be willing to put some points in Cunning. Plus it'd be refreshing to build a Cunning Warrior instead of a Cunning Rogue, would it not?

It's a Vanguard habit. Take ACTION before anyone else does. Moreover, take MASSIVE ACTION.

Hence, the ULTIMATE guide comes out even BEFORE the DEMO is released. Any true Vanguard would understand.

Sorry to sound pessimistic here, but my experience with the demo is that the controls of this game favor Mage or a Tank style Warrior far above a Vanguard style Warrior, simply because everything is slow:

(1) Camera movement  is slow. The best way to move the camera is moust right-click hold + drag, as keyboard camera control is not precise enough. Mouse camera control prevents you from targeting at the same time. Mouse camerca control is also very slow. For example, if you want to rotate the camera to the right, you have to swing the mouse right, click and hold, and then swing it back left, which is a three-step process, unlike in most FPS games where you simply have to swing your mouse towards the direction you want to rotate the camera.

(2) Mobility creates further confusion. Using Scythe a lot further confunds camera movement. It's like how Charge confunds the camera in Mass Effect, but much worse because the camera adjusts much slower to the suddenly changed perspective.

(3) Abilities casting is slow because it requires multiple actions. Because of the slow camera movement, it takes some time to select your desired target for Scythe - you often have to rotate the camera first, then click on the enemy to select it, both steps requiring the right mouse button. By the time this is done (without pausing), the target may have moved to a different, less tactically desirable position. This cannot me completely overcome with fast reaction/high mouse sensitivity, since it's inherent in the gameplay control where camera rotation and targeting requires the same mouse button.

Mages don't have nearly as much problems because they don't require frequent, drastic camera movements. Neither does a Tank Styel Warrior, for the same reason. Mage casting also have the advantage that most of their abilities are AOE and requires the left mouse button to cast, creating less clash with camera movement.

In summary, it is my impression that Vanguard Warrior and DW Rogue are handicapped because the controls are not designed for them and not customizable. The game design favors a Mage/Tank Warrior/Archer Rogue because of better controls.

Please tell me where I'm wrong. I'm a newbie to this game.

I'd say I had a much better experience doing CQC as a DW Rogue even, simple because Backstab auto-adjusts camera angle, and Rogue has an automatic Charge-like animation in their attacks which doesn't cost mana. Evade/Rush grants you absolutely superior mobility as well, and synergizes better with camera movement.

Perhap's it's the designer's wish that CQC loving players should stick with DW Rogue this time around.

Much of what you said is true, ranged characters are easier to control in this game. However, I have noticed a few things you can do to improve control tremendously.

1. Always hold down the right mouse button, so that you are freelooking and turning.
2. Use ESDF movement, so its like a first person shooter
3. Bind your favorite key to (attack closest target) and spam the heck out of this key. This alone eliminates the need to target with your mouse 70% of the time.
4. When you want to change targets, let go of the right mouse button, then double right click on the new enemy, then spam your attack closest target key. This allows a quick switch

Overall, after playing the demo, I havent decided which class Im going to play because mage is awfully fun. It will probably be between mage and vanguard warrior for me. We will see.

Thanks! I've been doing most of what you suggested except "Always hold down the right mouse button". I believe the devs should be embarassed that any player is forced to do that, LOL. Spamming "attack closest target" also hurts my pride, but I do it anyway.
