And I also really don't like bandits. They may always get the 'clenched fist'.

Yes, they're all meta-game decisions, or rationale rather.Helena Tylena wrote...

1. The place of mages in the story?
2. The appropriateness of the child of an apostate whose related to the human mage Warden to be a mage?
3. The fact that mages in DA II can wear pants and have melee attacks?
4. What companions I'm most interested in adventuring with?
Aren't those all meta-game decisions? Why would the Bethany/Carver issue be the only one?

People who are consistently sarcastic are douches.
Agreed. However, I plan to play my Hawke like that. Only agressive too. So yes, to an extent.

Do any of you know someone who speaks ENTIRELY 100% in sarcasm?
That's not possible.

My feeling is that sarcasm (and all forms of smartassery in general) is an art which must be wielded with subtlety, wit, and, occasionally, restraint. In my view, the only circumstances under which sarcasm may be douchey is when it is misused by people who aren't clever enough to employ it responsibly.
Otherwise, I always welcome reasonably well-written smartass dialogue options. In fact, I find it difficult to play RPGs now that don't generally present a smartass option. I become bored and irritated with them quickly. Jade Empire, for instance, was sorely lacking in this area. DA:O had a solid array of smartass options, though, and I hope DA2 will follow suit (and it seems that it will).

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. No. I prefer pragmatism.
Sarcasm and pragmatism often go hand in hand.

Exactly this. Sarcastic, and snarky lines are all well and good. But if you do it too often it just becomes stale, and lame. They come off as a person that can't take anything seriously, and tries pathetically hard to be funny.
