There's no need to worry about German reviews by the way. They rated Two worlds II obscenely high for what the game is.

I wouldn't generalize. Back in the day, GameStar was one of the very few mags which rated the obscenely overhyped and overrated Black&White "only" 85 % which caused a huge uproar on their own forums - until their readers actually played the game and had to agree. And later on GameStar conceded that their rating was still far too high. I guess that just goes to show that most ratings are very arbitrary.

But wouldn't that mean we need to be especially worried, because they tend to overrate?

Yea most reviewers rated Alpha Protocol and Vampire Bloodlines as le suck, and I loved both those games. So I'm taking it all with a grain of salt.

A minor technicality.

Perhaps I should have worded it differently, but what I meant to imply was that they gave Two worlds such a rating because it is from a German developer. Same goes for a bunch of entries in the Gothic series. German game magazines have the tendency to do that though.

If the cliffhanger is just the Varric Cassandra storyline, then I really don't have a problem with it since I never expected that storyline to be resolved.

Frankly, if that is the case, I am kinda glad that they are not, because I would imagine that it would take a good bit of time to conclude that arc decently, and I think that would make the game feel very disjointed and fragmented.

Yeah I see it now. Made in Poland but owned by a German developer. I still think national pride works in this situation.

Do reviews normally come out this early? How do they decide who to ship the game to? How does this process work? I'm just curious.

And I ain't drawing any conclusions till I read at least 20 reviews from varied sources.

The Killzone 3 review came out weeks before its release.  All depends on who gets paid with early review rights...;)

Maybe i'm oversimplifying but german reviewers tend to care more about classical RPG virtues rather than presentation, writing, story. Two Worlds 2 has pretty subpar writing, dialog, voiceover and fiddly controls but it offers a pretty big, open world to explore, lots to do, loot, quite extensive crafting system, open, skill based character progression.

"unsatisfying ending" I was afraid of this, then again I haven't played the game yet. Hopefully, I won't be disappointed. I kept meaning to ask whether or not the Hawke story is a two part or trilogy? I mean, I am a bit confused about this whole story within a story thing and especially the brink of war.. well, we'll see soon enough anyways 2 days till demo then March 8 for the game :P Europe.

There are no links because the reviews come from paper magazines. It's all over german message boards. It's legit.

Crimz...

While I agree they screw the 'sytem' up, VtM:B is a shockingly good underated game.

Bloodlines was awesome, indeed. It didn't get bad reviews, though. Metacritic is at 80. Considering in what state they shiped the game (tons of bugs), dunno if they deserved more.

I know it was not a "bad" game but I am at heart a rule thumper (I know.....it's a character flaw) the way they handled the ST system there was SO atrocious I could not bring myself to enjoy the game

now on second thought

Bioware should make a Requiem for Rome game in which we get to play a Duguthim.......god that would be RIDICULOUSLY awesome

Well...'bad' is a matter of opinion hehe...it's certainly not 'great'....buer deffinately under-appreciated...

but then I played it when it came out ona crappy pc.....and can't say I enjoyed it. Played it again recently with all the lastes patches etc etc on my new rig and loved it....but it still has majot issues and flaws which let the game down....

As for rulesets...I actually agree with you, I find the problem mainly is transfering those rules into a computer enviroment...I think the best instance of this working well was actually with NWN..though the SP game itself left a lot to be desired.

I disagree....sometimes the problem is the devs not understanding how the system works and trying to approximate it to something they DO know thus destroying the way the basic ruleset works

Vampire: the Masquerade - Redemption has a full 2nd ed V:tM ruleset with SOME approximation

it worked wonderfully and played like a tactical RPG

But most would consider Redemption to be vastly inferior to Bloodlines...so perhaps from a 'gameplay' pov, Bloodlines had the better system?

And on this discussion, one of the reasons I liked DA:O so much, that they didn't use a tried and tested system and implemented somthing of their own.

well...gameplay was completely different, Redemption was a party based tactical RPG, Bloodlines was a solo shooter RPG mix. Remember Also most of the European press showered Redemption with a LOT of praise (face it....it was an amazing game that sadly came out exactly at the same time as Diablo 2

I've nothing against someone using their own systems (it's always a good thing) but it is wrong to make a CRPG out of such and such setting and systems and then mud everything up

Ahhhh...Diablo II... *gets all teary eyed and nostalgic*

Aheam...anyway...

Yes, really if they cannot make the system work on a computer, then they should really not bother trying at all....but then...that comes down to I imagine, are they making a game for a demographic...or making a game for original PnP players?
