Assassin Infiltrator as a Caster, better than Agent/Demolisher

I was running a similar build to TonyGunslinger's Flashbang - Improved Cryo Agent, except I alternate between Energy Drain/Reave instead of Flashbang, and use my favorite Tempest instead of Shuriken. The mentality is strip defenses with powers (ED/Reave or squad power) then freeze everything with Cryo on Viper, Mattock, and Tempest (depending on the type of enemy).

Incidentally, I decided to go for Assassin rather than Agent, because more power damage = better stripping on Insanity NG+, and more damage in ED/Reave = better survivability. I also used the +5% power damage visor to have a total +20% character power damage bonus (I chose the Kestral Shoulder because it's too good).

Then I suddenly come to realize that this Assassin is clearly a better caster than any of my Agent builds. Perhaps even better than my Demolishers (my Neural Shock/AI Hack Mechanics are entirely different and not comparable). Assassin has much better power damage which synergizes well with ED/Reave, but it also seem to have better cooldown.

Why? The reason is actually simple. Tony's Agent is partly based on using Sniper Zoom as a cheap Adrenaline Rush, and powers cool down at the same speed from Shepard's POV within Sniper Zoom and without. So Sniper Zoom is equal to a substantial amount of power cooldown bonus, namely:

Agent with full upgrades has (1-0.2-0.15)*(1-0.5)=0.325 times the cooldown as normal on powers such as Reave or Energy Drain (0.2 = Tech/Biotic cooldown upgrade, 0.15 = Agent bonus, 0.5 = Sniper Zoom slowdown);

Assassin with full upgrades has (1-0.2-0.09)*(1-0.6)=0.284 times the cooldown as normal on powers such as Reave or Energy Drain (0.2 = Tech/Biotic cooldown upgrade, 0.09 = Assassin bonus, 0.6 = Sniper Zoom slowdown);

So if you're spending most of your time in Sniper Zoom, as you should with a Viper, Assassin offers better cooldown AND better damage as a caster than Agent. It may even be more effective than the Demolisher when it comes to casting pure damaging powers such as Incinerate, Reave, or Energy Drain.

All hail the Caster Assassin! :devil:

Hey iOnlySignIn, that's a good find. I remember how fast my Cloak was cooling down when using the Viper to the point that I was able activate Cloak again as soon as I've emptied an entire clip. I did use Assassin a few times near the end of the game because the 60% time dilation helped tremendously in lining up headshots with the Viper, and by that point Agent wasn't as big of a deal unless you're using other weapons while casting.

Good strategy, looks like I'll be toying around with this as a soon as I've finished my Claymore Soldier.

Wow, this finding could be crucial for a kung fu assasin build: http://social.biowar...1/index/1618456

@ Tony: It's nice that you approve. :-) I'll leave the video making to you - my computer is below the minimum spec requirement for ME2, and FRAPS means total break down.

I still think Flashbang works better with Agent though, as it doesn't get the Tech/Biotic cooldown bonus, nor does it benefit much from Assassin's +15% power damage bonus.

The only problem I have with the Assassin Caster so far is I'm not sure when to use Cloak, except as an escape/retreat mechanism. Energy Drain/Reave just seems much better for aggression. Nor am I even sure about getting Assassination Cloak, since we're not one-shotting things anyway.

@ Locutus: But zooming in the Viper all the time but not pulling the trigger would be somewhat regrettable, would it not? I still think best melee-only class is Soldier. Strength Boost Pads + All Other Kestral Armor Pieces + Heightened AR = Fist of Fury.
