I've installed DA:O twice now (ultimate edition) and both times, it failed to confirm something important in the installation, and then it refused to open because it wasn't finding the PhysXLoader.dll file. How can this be solved?

Sorry to hear you're having problems. There are several threads on this site addressing your issue. You can use the search function at the top of the screen, or (even better) do a directed Google search like this--

Well, thank you, sort of. I found NVidia and installed that, but now it's saying that I lack a supported video card.

Could you post your hardware specs and game version?  That might help the troubleshooting process.

Lenovo Vista PC, 4 gigs of RAM, 64-bit operating system... I haven't had any luck finding what my video cards are, though, and I'm not really sure where to look to find out. I do know that installing the NVidia driver failed, because it lacked compatible software to run on.

The game is the Ultimate Edition.

Okay... if you go to the Windows Start Menu, select "Run" and type this:

dxdiag

It should load up the DirectX diagnostic screen. It may take a moment to load and access your system. When it's done, click on the display tab. The info on your graphics card/chip should be there.

Try opening the command line (click on Start, then Run) and typing dxdiag, then posting the readout so we can take a look at it.

edt: Ninja'ed!

Let us know what the brand and series number of graphics card is, too, as in NVidia GTX 480 for example.

Oh-ho. It's an onboard chipset. No wonder the NVidia drivers didn't work.  If you even have an expansion board graphics card, that's a problem, because it's not detecting it. Hmmm... must do some further investigation...

Do you know if you even have a graphics card installed in your system?  Because I doubt that Dragon Age will run on many onboard graphics accelerators.

Actually, I think I'll just give up until I can buy my own computer. This isn't my own, and I can't fiddle with it much.

I'll need to continue blaming Bioware for making a game this finicky, it seems. Though... I take that back, if this chipset thing can't run any modern 3D games.

Yeah, PhysX requires an NVidia card or something that can support an equivalent. An Intel motherboard graphics chipset isn't going to cut it. It's odd, though, I didn't think PhysX was requied for Dragon Age. I'd try uninstalling the NVidia software that you've put on there. Do you have the system restore or driver discs that came with the computer from the manufacturer?

Feel free, but you'll look silly doing it.  It says right on the box what kind of hardware is needed to run the game, which you don't have.  There's hardly anything "finicky" about it...  modern games (like less than 3-4 years old) need specialized 3D hardware to run.  It's just how it is, nothing specific to Dragon Age, per se.

No... PhysX does not require an Nvidia card.  The company that made PhysX was bought by Nvidia a while back.  Dragon Age does need PhysX to run, but it runs on the CPU, not the graphics card, even if you *have* an Nvidia card.

Now I am starting to think the original poster tried to install the actual Nvidia display driver.  The need to try-- http://www.nvidia.co...513-driver.html

Still don't know if the game will run on a unsupported graphics chip.  But there it is.

I know, I know. I'm just... irritated. But I'll get over it.

Guess what the first DA relevant result is on that search? Yep. THIS useless thread. So perhaps instead of introducing us all to the magic of Google you can post a solution to OP's problem (and mine).

To RaenImrahl (Moderator)
I am late to the party - I know - but your knowledge seems to be the best of all the blogs I've searched. I too am having the same PhysX error pop up. Based on your instructions above using "dxdiag", I finally learned how to find out what I have - it is ATI Radeon X1250. Is this card going to work with DA:O Ultimate Edition? The CPU is AMD Turion 64x2, in a 3-yr Compaq 6515b.

I meant "3-yr old Compaq" - a laptop

Raen' schedule changed last September, and left his time at a premium. The chip that was used as the basis of the X1250 is now six years old, and was already a very low power part, far below the minimum required to run this game. Add in the various negative impacts of turning it into an embedded chip inside of a larger chipset chip, and being used in a laptop, and another 20 - 25% of an already inadequate performance is taken away.

Perhaps too cynically, I would think someone was pulling a fast one to put a five year old chipset chip into a three year old laptop in the first place.

IMO, it will make no difference if you track down the source of the problem with the PhysX loader, something else will ruin your enjoyment, such as bog-slow animation.

Personally, I think that the practical minimum choices for the two video cards in the game's official requirements should be the Radeon X800 Pro, and the Geforce 6800 GS, at least, for small textures - it will take a Radeon X1650 XT (or X1800 GTO, same thing, almost) for medium or better textures.

The official Radeon X850 is faster yet than the X800, but has better availability of up to date graphics drivers.

According to Notebook Check, it is related to the X700, but that doesn't quite meet my recollection:
