So there I was, coming up with an idea for a new ME2 run through, an Engineer. Named Eric. Here's what I have so far:
POWERS:
Lv1 Overload
Attack/Explosive Drone
Deep Cryo Blast
Improved AI Hacking
Mechanic
Enhanced Dominate
Basically, a super-powered Puppet Master, Chessmaster, Distraction - whatever you want to call him.
He takes over his opponent, controls the crowds and battlefield, and
never gets hit whilst his opponents shoot wildly at their peers, in
every scenario. AWESOME.
Not only doees he use his powers, but his team mates too - Kasumi, Grunt and Legion form the SUPER
DISTRACTION TEAM!
They work against every enemy type, though if he needs heavier hitters
he can use Garrus, Miranda, Thane, Samara or Mordin. The rest are
unneeded due to unsatisfactory caster powers (Zaeed), terrible cooldowns
(Tali), and copycat movesets (Jack and Jacob).
Grunt and Legion can walk into the middle of a firefight unfased.
Legion, Grunt, Garrus and Thane fill Weapon Damage needs.
Kasumi can kill husks and Harbinger.
Kasumi, Garrus, Miranda, Thane, Samara and Mordin kill Shield/Armour/Barrier so he can get his powers on.
Garrus and Grunt do Ammo powers whilst having other roles.
So here is my problem... Do I go Sniper or Assault Rifle? And for each, do I go Viper/Incisor or Mattock/Vindicator?
Gah
so many choices. At the moment, I'm leaning towards Incisor - great
versus shields; works really well with insta-cast powers like Drone,
Hack and Dominate; doesn't lose accuracy as fast as Viper. However, its
pickup is rubbish, and its overall damage isnt too great either, and
I'll probably be switching to the Tempest (small ammo clip balances well
with large clip) often. Am I right in saying that a Combat Drone sent
through a Sniper scope can turn off spawn points if placed in the right
direction?
Is it possible to be an agressive long-range soldier? I really dont want him to get boring.

Why not choose the shotgun instead of ar/sr?

I have a similar build, and I tried the incisor, hated it, reloaded, and chose the Vindicator (Don't have mattock, tried it at a friend's house and didn't like it). Vindicator is the way to go. If you have the Geth Pulse Rifle, that works quite well too, although you don't have any points in incinerate unlike me, so you may want an AR with better vs armor damage.
So I'd say Vindicator. Also, you may find that the zoom-in-scope-while-casting-from-cover thing may annoy you a lot.

If you're keen on picking SR then I'd suggest the Viper. Loved it on my Engineer and much better than the Incisor.

Yep. I used Viper for my engineer and it worked great. Next time I'm going for shotguns though.

The reason I'm not gonna use Shotgun is because I've just done Assault Sentinel and Vanguard. I was looking round youtube, saw this anti-shield sniper video by cruz1ale and the Viper just wins, really. So it looks like its gonna be the viper for me, unless you lot persuade me to use the mattock.
Oh and yeah I do have the firepower DLC.

The Viper is designed to be good as a main weapon for Infiltrators (lots of ammo, semi-auto fire, bonus damage against shields and barriers), so the test in that video is biased towards that end. For anyone else, a sniper rifle is not a very good primary weapon in my experience. If you do go with sniper rifle for non-Infiltrators, you should use your SMG or assault rifle more often, so an Incisor or Mantis is usually better, because you will use them when they are ideal, not all the time (there is an exception in Widow-using soldiers, because Widow has enough ammo and damage to be a viable primary weapon, with the assault rifle becoming a secondary weapon).
So, go with a sniper rifle, but not the Viper, since you already have the Locust or Tempest for your primary weapon.
((Note that all of this is from my personal playing experience on Insanity and is obviously colored by my own play style and biases. From a pure mathematical analysis, Viper might prove to be a better weapon.))

I picked sniper rifle(used Viper and it's good), but I'll choose shotgun next time.

I like the Mattock as a bonus for caster characters. It's accurate enough to use like a sniper rifle without the annoying scope cast thing. Mattock is best for medium to long range. For short range, break out your pistol or SMG. Vindicator is a great medium range weapon. I don't like it for short range. The Geth Pulse Rifle covers all ranges and is good against shields and barriers but has lower overall damage. It can still we a workable choice.
If you do want a sniper rifle, the Viper is my favorite all around SR. I've used the Incisor and it's fine, too. I actually like the Incisor better with an Infiltrator.

I'm having the same engineer dilemma myself right now so I thought I'd post here instead of making my own thread.
The play style is kinda aggressive and short to mid-range. I'm using the Tempest SMG, so there's not much need for a shotgun. Should I augment my mid-range with ARs or else acquire long range via SRs?
