When this game first came out, I preordered it and picked it up on release day, having anticipated it for a very long time.
I have yet to really play it, though, because the controls to me were clunky and unmanageable. I had no problem with the camera, as I have heard many complain about, but more the fact that you cannot move left or right. You have to run forward, turn your character right, then move forward some more. It really disheartened me, because I never had issues with movement in BG1, BG2, or NWN1. Add to that the fact that I've played a particular MMO for years now, and thus my tendency towards movement naturally wishes the controls to act as that game does (which DAO mirrors, incidentally), and I just find the game unplayable.
I recently reinstalled, thinking maybe this was later patched, and I came to find that it was not. I really want to play this game (hell, I paid a lot of money for it). Has anyone found a workaround for this? How did you combat the awkward movement? Any suggestions?

It depends what camera mode you're in, but doesn't Q&E or A&D make you side-step to the left or right? That's reconfigurable anyway.

Yes, I can reconigure which buttons allow me to sidestep, but I guess my gripe is with the whole side-stepping process. It's awkward and disrupts the natural low of movement. I would like to just be able to run fluidly and not have to stop to reposition mysel to run towards the left. Example: In DAO, I can run towards the right by either moving my camera towards that direction or simply pressing my D key. In NWN2, I have to run forward (W), then stop, press D to ace my character right, then press W again to run in that direction.
Did no one else ind this movement scheme awkward and disruptive?

My characters move exactly the same way in NWN1 and NWN2. I am always in exploration mode.

It requires a bit of tinkering, but even now with Storm of Zehir, there's something about it all that makes me upset.
But it's pretty customizable, so it could be adapted if you try very hard... Well, with camera I mean.
For movement you kinda have to work with what you get.
