Is the Avenger useless once you get other assault rifles?

I'll generally stick with Viper as my all around SR. I don't like the
Incisor as much but it's still useful. I like the Widow better with a
Soldier but it's a solid choice for an Infiltrator.
To be fair, the heavy pistols aren't particularly badly balanced. But then again, they're pistols. So long as you don't give them a sniper scope and godly DPS like they did in Halo 1, they're not that difficult to balance. There's not really a heck of a lot directions you can take them. You've got the analogues to a 9mm, Desert Eagle and Colt Python, so they're pretty difficult to screw up.
I'm not really sure how you can claim the sniper rifles are all good. The Mantis has such a restricted ammo pool it can't benefit from the armour piece that offers +10% ammo, as 10% of the Mantis ammo pool doesn't even equate to a single shot. The incisor is only useful because it's bugged when in the hands of a squadmate. If it functioned how it was supposed to it would be totally superfluous.
I think the issue with SMGs is that Bioware didn't seem to know what they wanted to do with them. The way they were handed out to classes seemed to indicate that they were supposed to be all-round weapons, but their stats didn't support that. Rather than figure out what the roles were supposed to be, they released an SMG that was basically an assault rifle in all but name, leading to this daft situation where the only class in the game that couldn't wield a good assault rifle was the bloomin' soldier, who instead has to wield a scopeless sniper rifle or a chaingun to reach their potential.
I dunno. I just kinda wish Bioware had figured out what specifically each class of weapons was supposed to do and build around that, rather than trying to fudge all sorts of different weapons into the same class and keep it balanced.

So I guess you play on Casual? I imagine Avenger would be fine there.
(the only reason I could come up with)

Yeah, even on Normal you can still find yourself spending an entire clip bringing down a single merc....

Exactly. Casual is literally the only difficulty I play on (I tend to prefer it), although I did Insanity once for the achievement.Kronner wrote...

Well, to be fair, if you're wanting more damage for a gun on Casual difficulty, doesn't that tell you there's a bit of an issue there?

LOL, perhaps. It's just that the Avenger is, by default, a relatively weak assault rifle. It doesn't become powerful enough for me until at least Level 5 Damage, which is usually towards the end of the game.JaegerBane wrote...

The damage upgrades past the third one (so both "extra" upgrades are unlocked too) are meaningless.

In any case, had the Avenger been just a little bit more lethal, it would be my favorite assault rifle without question.

Some fights get tough, but that's the whole idea in sticking with these two rifles as the Soldier

Same here. Currently I prefer the Revenant if for no other reason than it's the only automatic AR that actually does a good level of damage. Sure, it needs to be fired in short bursts at medium range, but it does enough damage per shot to compensate.

Revenant is my favorite too but I use it for almost CQC or supressing fire to open up shots for snipers.

That, or you can learn how to control the recoil, so you can simply keep firing until you need to replace the heat sink. It's not that easy initially, but becomes almost reflexive with time. The only annoying part is that it moves the targeting reticule down depending on how much recoil you suffered from instead of how much you moved from the starting position when you stop firing, so you have to retarget every time if you are not in cover and replacing the heat sink.

To be honest, I've found rapid clicks (almost how I'd use the Mattock) seems to still spit out plenty of bursts (2-3 rounds a piece) but the accuracy isn't that bad (course this relies on having the Targeting VI, but hey). It's generally not the recoil that's the issue, you just pull down on the mouse while shooting.

Mattock beats Revenant on every range except extreme CQC...and Soldier got shotguns for that...I wish Geth Pulse Rifle was viable...its simply too weak ;/

Mattock beats everything at every range. It hasn't been balanced properly. I don't know who's idea it was to make the fastest firing weapon under Adrenaline Rush a 50 point-a-shot battle rifle, but I kinda wish they'd spent a little more time testing it. It's so OP that it skews the difficulty of the game.

Outside of AR its still insanely OP.They really should have caped the firing rate... if you got good trigger finger Mattock fires like full autoJaegerBane wrote...

As I said earlier, the Mattock doesn't seem as if it was balanced properly. According to the blog it's one balancing factor was it's low ammo level, but even that isn't done properly, as a single thermal clip pick-up often gives you back about a 1/4 of it's entire ammo pool (closer to a third when you're low on ammo).
That's like the equivalent of picking up 4 shots a piece for the Widow. It's as if it was never tested.

To be fair A LOT of the balancing issues are more PC related than console for the Mattock.
On the consoles you cannot pull the trigger buttons nearly as fast as you can click on PC, not to mention if you even get CLOSE to as fast (which I can almost do now), your accuracy is not nearly as good as on PC. I watch all the PC videos and I see people shooting near full auto with pinpoint accuracy... I can assure you on console its not nearly as effective.
I still think the Mattock is overpowered a tad on consoles, mostly due to the large ammo pickups.
Honestly, I think another part of the problem is that the other AR's are also underpowered. The Vindicator has such a low ammo count that misses are very unforgivable, and the Collector/Geth/Avenger are all too low in base damage.
Give the Vindicator about 50% more ammo(or larger pickups), and the Avenger/Geth/Collector a 25% boost or so in base damage, and I think you have guns you MIGHT consider using over the Mattock.
Like I said though, a lot of the Mattock overpowered arguments are mostly from PC players who have a MASSIVE accuracy+RoF bonus over the consoles where the gun is a bit more "human" than "god-like"

I'll take your word for it. Course, it's fire rate is only part of the problem. It's design basically means it completely wipes out the point behind Vindicators and Heavy Pistols.

This is precisely why I prefer the Revenant. With the assault rifles, for some reason, the player has to make a choice between plenty of ammo or respectable DPS, they can't have both. The Revenant manages this (and actually functions like a proper assault rifle to boot) but I've gotta mod any non-soldier character I play just to use an automatic.
Like I said though, a lot of the Mattock overpowered arguments are mostly from PC players who have a MASSIVE accuracy+RoF bonus over the consoles where the gun is a bit more "human" than "god-like"
I don't really understand how this affects the situation.
