Having looked into the XML documents which are used to trigger the online portion of the activation process, I found that it's actually using a program in (for me) "C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\Activation" to run the activation process. So...I looked in there and found a couple of other XML docs, but the one that interested me most was the one under "C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\activation\\META-INF\\AIR" called "application.XML".
In this file, the first section references "http://ns.adobe.com/air/application/1.1". I tried connecting, through my browser (Firefox), to "http://ns.adobe.com" and received a message stating that I could not connect to this site while working offline; buttons: "Work Offline" and "Connect". I clicked "Connect" and the site was accessed. I immediately tried running the game and it's working now.....
NOTE: I had also noticed that something was attempting to access port 18081 through my router, so I turned it on, as well, just in case.
I haven't been able to replicate any issues since, so I'm thinking it *might* have solved the initial issue. Hopefully it will work for you guys as well.
Happy hunting!
