Hello!

I'm playing Steam version (MotB+SoZ, English) of the game on WinXP SP3.

The bug is triggered at the Act III of the original campaign when I approach Nevalle and say that the keep is ready for war. Two quests are marked as completed at this moment: “Forging Alliances” and “Fortifying Crossroad Keep”, granting 4000 XP total, and allowing my char to gain lvl 18. Then the game enters strange state: it responds to mouse movements (so I can move the cursor and highlight objects/buttons), but not to mouse clicks (so I can't interact with objects or in-game controls). It also responds to keyboard input, so I can view, for example, character info or inventory. But when I press ‘J’ to view the journal, game crashes. I've reloaded the last save multiple times, moved between keep areas, tried to change active party members. Nothing helps.

There is nothing left for me to do except circling the keep and watching cash inflow (keep timer ~70%, greycloacks received the best possible training, weapons, and armor; the keep is fully rebuilt and fortified etc.), but even if I continue to do so, this doesn't get me any XP (I hope that reaching new level before talking to Nevalle will help to circumvent the bug). I have earlier saves, of course (e.g. the one after defeating the third Shadow Reaver), but I really don't want to waste hours of playing to arrive to the same dead end… Any suggestions?

False alarm. The problem was quite simple: not enough disk space for the auto save triggered. Too bad the game wasn't able to report the error properly, but that was probably the first thing I should have been checking anyway.
