Nvm the wikipedia history thing. 7th gen is in a nutshell: high def 1080p support, motion and/or gyro controlers, touch and play capabilities for certain consoles and stuff like that. Advancing towards the next gen is not so much dependant on game devs as it is on breakthroughs in hardware tech. 8th or 9th gen games = virtual reality imo :)

Meh I wouldn't prefer that, plus if there is going to be virtual reality I think it would be 9th. Isn't Microsoft and PS3 (either of the two) going for a 3D look? 8th gen XD.

You don't consider motion sensor tech the next generation?

I hope BioWare wont waste time on creating a new engine and just use the superb tsood engine (The Witcher 2). That engine was designed for RPGs and is not only visually top notch but also optimized for complex story telling.

CD project red used BioWares Aurora engine for the The Witcher 1, which had very similar performance, loading time and small, restrictive environment problems as DA:O. But CDred has apperently outdone their idols now and unless BioWare secretly developed the most awesome engine ever in secret, they would be well advised to use a better engine than their own and concentrate their efforts on creating a great game with it. Engines have never been a strength of BioWare. It would be great if the actual strengths would not be held back by technical limitations of the engine.

From what I remember one of the reasons BioWare created the DA engine was because they wanted something that could handle numerous fully controllable characters (not many engines are geared for this).

And it turns out Obsidian are creating their own engine for Dungeon Siege 3 for exactly the same reason. So I'd say they can't just make, say the cryengine, work for multi party rpgs.

3D won't take off until they can get rid of the glasses.

i agree these graphics aren't good enough, the only reason they can get away with it is because of the fanboyism and rpg players who think good graphics and good storytelling are impossible

Will someone just lock this thread already? I'm so tired of seeing this topic being brought up every 10 minutes.

The new graphics engine will feature triple buffering, v-sync and colored lighting

Would be pretty awesome if Bioware did employ the RED Engine that is created by CD Projekt. It looks ridiculously powerful. But the chances for that are slim.

I dunno about that, CDProject did say that they are not keeping their engine excluded for them self. And CDProject do amire Bioware. And I bet they love to play a Bioware game that is made with their engine, honestly who isn't?

It'll have to run on consoles. There is only so much they can do, you know.

Consoles can run better engines than eclipse.

Fanboism showing again.

Again, like I told another one who complained about my 'trolling'.

If you paid attention to the thread I am putting... y'know what, I'm just going to quote myself.

You quote my post as an example of fanboyism? I have no problem with you criticizing DA2 or BioWare. I told you what my problem is: the fact that you keep making the same argument in pretty much every thread. Especially since you should know by now that it always pisses some people off and ends up derailing the threads.
I didn't call you a troll. If I had thought you were a troll, I wouldn't have bothered addressing you in the first place.
If you want to keep flogging the carcass of this poor horse, then I suggest you find a less flame-baity way to do it.

Anathemic, you need to define what you view as 'Next-gen' because SC 2, WOW, and Diablo 3 do not look anything like the games you compared to DA2.

The Creation Engine by Bethesda looks pretty damn good as well.

Will DA3 use Unreal or whatever third party engine is available at the moment?

Unreal 4 for DA 3. Just remember, I so totally called it.

The two engines serve different purposes. The Dragon Age engine was built for large areas with lots of interactive objects (because it was originally designed for just PCs) whereas Unreal Engine 3 was always designed by Epic as being customizable console render-ware. Both have strength and weaknesses, the DA engine is able to create large populated areas with lower visual fidelity compared to UE3, while UE3 has higher detail but can handle fewer objects at the same time if framerate is to be maintained. The relatively small areas in ME2 compared to ME1 are a direct result of this, however UE3 can (in some cases) offset this shortcoming by allowing developers to create lavish non-interactive backdrops.

I personally do not want to see UE3 being used for any Dragon Age games, as I think the current engine does fit the franchise perfectly and BioWare already has a "shiny" franchise to appeal to people who just care about graphics in Mass Effect. *If* BioWare were considering replacing their Dragon Age engine with any kind of leased engine, I'd like to see them using CD Projekt RED's Red Engine, as it looks quite good at rendering midevil settings.

I highly doubt that the RED Engine will be able to be utilized for consoles and I don't think Bioware will neglect their Console fan-base.

Posting irrevelent and useless comments doesn't help make this thread any less stupid, if you want it closed, pm a dev rather than put in a useless post.

More on topic, if Bioware do make a new engine, it will be for the next gen.

In its current form, no. But I was just expressing a preference. There's trade-off with any engine, but I'm sure they could create an offshoot that consoles would be able to run. Just because CD Projekt RED haven't made one at this time, does not mean it's impossible.

And remember that DAO's engine was not intended to run on consoles at all, until EA bought up BioWare.
