We could make one where all the monsters are dead before you get there too if you like.

most of those chest doesn't contain anything of real value. it's basicall cheap crap you sell for a few coppers.

Well I think we should be able to bash the crap out of them and open them. If I found a chest in the forest I wouldn't walk away "Oh well, it's locked." when I'm carrying all kinds of heavy weapons. Or I'd grab a big rock. Silly. If it's important to the story to keep something locked just make it a comment pop up that it's protected by a spell or made of material too strong to break. Breaks immersion when you don't have a choice like that.

Yeah that is a cool idea. Maybe you can try to bash it open with the weapon of the active character. Then there could be a slight chance of the weapon breaking or injuring yourself. Instead of just -hp, it could be an actual injury like when you fall in battle.

I like the idea of being able to bust it open if you cant pick the lock. A chance of injury sounds fair, though probably just minor ones, I dont really see people cracking their skulls open from bashing a rock against a lock.

I liked the way it was done in Neverwinter Nights. ( At least I think it was that, my memory's off at the moment. )
Have the chest bashable, but with a chance of destroying what was in it.
