In my first ME2 playthrough I almost exclusively (at least until the collector base) used Mordin and Jack. Personally I thought she was awesome.

But how do other people think she compares against Samara, who would be my other optional for Biotic dominance on the team?

Thoughts, strategies, tips etc?

Jack is a better support character than Samara, since she has Shockwave and can allow access to Squad Warp Ammo without the player buying it. However, Samara is a better combatant on her own, since she has Reave, Throw and Assault Rifles. Basically, if you can micromanage Jack and don't expect her to do everything on her own (and if you are not a Vanguard), she can work just fine. If you are lazy (which is not necessarily a bad thing - sometimes you just want to explode virtual heads when playing a game) or a Vanguard, Samara is a better choice.

Cheers Khan. This time round I might go get Samara first before getting Jack and give her a test run and see how she handles. I play engineer btw.

It depends on the difficulty level. Jack steamrolls through lower difficulties, while half of the appeal of Samara's Reave isn't obvious unless you're playing on Hardcore or Insanity. This is not to say that Jack is useless on Insanity, or that Samara is a sub-par choice on lower difficulty levels, though.

You can't really do that, though, since Samara's recruitment mission is only available after Horizon, and you have to recruit Jack to do the Horizon mission.

...well, I suppose you could mod or edit the game, but then again, at that point you are not really playing the same game.

Well the characters that don't have ship upgrades tend to make better squadmates because they have upgrades that are only useful in combat (Jack, Mordin, Grunt, and Legion). While the characters with ship upgrades are helpful in filling positions on the suicide mission (Jacob, Miranda, Garrus, Tali, and Samara/Morinth).

Ultimately I don't think it's all that important which characters you bring anyway. I pick the ones I honestly prefer. In this case I'd pick Samara. She proves that you can be a complete badass without having to say it out loud every 5 seconds like Jack :)

I do disagree very much with the comment about the ship upgrades though. Miranda has the best class passive because it buffs the whole squad, and because she has good skills (Warp, Overload, free 1 point Slam). Jacob is also quite good because he has a good ammo skill as well as Pull. It doesn't particularly hurt them that they can't use a Krogan shotgun or something like that.

You dont have to recruit Jack to do the horizon mission, you just need to be a certain level to activate Horizon. Give it a try, fly around the galaxy doing enough side quests, and you will be forced to go to Horizon with just Miranda and Jacob.

Also, the recruitment progression was done in that order due to disk swapping with the 360, and devs wanting the game experience to be identical on all platforms, so modding the game to allow for recruitment in any order is how the game was initially meant to be played, but 360 hardware limitations is what caused the order to be forced upon you.

Not to be rude, but you're just wrong here.  The Horizon mission triggers only after recruiting Mordin, Garrus, Jack, and doing Grunt's recruitment (you don't have to open him up though).  This happens regardless of what you do or how long you take.  All the N7 missions available and any DLC won't speed that up for anything in an unmodded game.  Maybe you're thinking of the Collector Ship mission?  That one triggers after doing five missions post-Horizon, regardless of what they are (even N7 missions).

On topic, it really depends on your build and what you expect out of your resident biotic.  Jack can be awesome, but requires some micromanagement.  Samara can also be awesome, but she's more reserved in her combat style.  If you want an in-your-face biotic, then take Jack.  If you want a support/ranged biotic, then take Samara.

That's good advice. Reave is far more useful against the extra layer of protection in upper levels.

The final answer depends a lot of what class Shep is and who's the third member.

Squad Warp Ammo isnt worser then Reave. And with the Geth Shotgun Jack is also doing decent weapon damage.

Jack on any difficulty below Hardcore, Samara with Area Reave on Hardcore and Insanity.

Jack lets you hit enemies with Pull more frequently than Samara; but on higher difficulty levels her Shockwave ability sucks while Samara's Area Reave is brilliant against any enemy with barriers or armor.

I love Warp ammo; but I usually take it as my bonus power. Furthermore if you want to spec Jack out to get squad warp ammo, you want be able to use pull as frequently with her.

You won't be able to max pull and her passive class power with Samara either if you unlock Area Reave; but on the uphand you'll get throw which is useful simply because it has such a quick cooldown.

if you had tried what you talk about, you'd know that it is FALSE.

Why Jack vs Samara? Take both and watch them wreak havoc!

On a serious note both have merits to compete with one another, Jacks Squad Warp ammo can boost your weapon damage so if you're playing a combat orientated class like Soldier or Infiltrator then it can come in handy especially as they don't have access to it.

The same could be said for Samara and a more 'caster' Shep as Reave will strip barriers/armour to set up for a power to cast yourself. And as for Jack sucking cause she has Shockwave well in fairness Samara has Throw which is needed to unlock Pull and is not that much different to SW as I barely use Throw on Samara and in some instances SW is better than 3 point Throw.

Short answer; they're both useful squadmates and to me they're quite similar in terms of effectiveness.
