I think Costin's dwarf (Duran?) thought that asking anyone to sacrifice their souls to be too much, so he decided to do it. It's not really clear what happens to the soul of the Warden, but the whole thing does imply its annihilation.

Hey, I remember this. I was really impressed with his stance and how passionate he was about it. He simply could not allow another person to destroy their own soul when he was in a position to prevent it. I wish there was a way to search by user in specific threads (much the same way we can find bioware posts) because wading through a 500 page thread to find that gem is daunting. It was a good post.

Let's say you recruited Loghain, meaning Alistair has left the party and the grey wardens.
You also refuse to do the dark ritual.

When the archdemon is nearly slain, Loghain offers to sacrifice himself for
the good of Ferelden. A patriot to the end. But, are there any reasons
for the warden to sacrifice him or herself instead of Loghain, despite
his crimes and wish for atonement?

If you think Loghain will be a better Warden Commander than your PC and can do a better job of reestablishing the Grey Wardens than your PC, then it is better to let him live.  This all boils down to whether or not you think  his own experience as de facto ruler of Ferelden while Maric was alive, as well as his status as a folk hero gives him an advantage over your younger, racially different in some cases, but over all more inexperienced Warden.   It may.  It might not.

I always let him live and work as the figure head and recruiter, because I'm not convinced that everyone across Ferelden hates his guts.  I think the nobles might, maybe some of the merchants do, but I do not believe that the majority of the common folk, the people that are likely to join up with the Grey Wardens anyway, dislike him to the extent that many claim.  Remember, the game only shows you one side of the story: the Warden's, and so you are bound to see many examples of consensual validation in terms of opinions and beliefs. :)
